CLASSICAL CHINESE FACTS AND INFORMATION   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Among Chinese speakers, classical Chinese has been largely replaced by Vernacular_Chinese (''baihua''), a style of writing that is much closer to modern spoken Chinese, while speakers of non-Chinese languages have largely abandoned Classical Chinese in favor of local vernaculars.
A person writing a letter that is otherwise in ''baihua'' might include ''wenyan'' expressions and phrases to express that the matter being discussed is formal or serious and important.
Most Chinese people with at least a middle school education are able to read basic ''wenyan'', because the ability to read (but not write) ''wenyan'' is part of the Chinese middle_school and high_school curricula and is part of the college entrance examination.

Before we ask why these scholars believed Rulin waishi to be the precise specimen of baihua literature, we have to question their definition and conceptualization of baihua.
For the term baihua in reference to the vernacular did not come into wide use until the first decade of the twentieth century, and it was Hu Shi and other May Fourth scholars who elaborated the term and gave it historical, cultural, and ideological significance.
Setting up a dichotomy of baihua and wenyan, they define baihua as a written language based on the spoken language used by "the people (renmin)," thereby granting it the qualities they are eager to promote -- authenticity and the sense of immediacy.

The newly defined vernacular baihua, an idiom close to the northern languages, not only served as media for a new literature but also would be (ab)used as language for the whole nation.
Promulgating baihua was not only equal to generating a new literary style but a universally new political sphere.
Apart from the struggles in the Conference on Unification of Pronunciation, where a linguistic secession of the south seemed to be imminent, early debates about language planning show that the avant-garde of Chinese linguists still feared the remote power of the classical language wenyan, traditional media of imperial literati.

Since the May Fourth Movement (1919), the formal standard for written Chinese has been baihua, or Vernacular Chinese, the grammar and vocabulary of which are similar, but not identical, to the grammar and vocabulary of modern spoken Mandarin.
Although few new works are written in classical Chinese, it is taught in middle and high school and forms part of college entrance examinations, and classical Chinese forms are sometimes included in written works to give them a highly formal or archaic flavor.
The other regional languages do not have widely used alternative written standards, but many have local characters or use characters that are archaic in "baihua".

Chinese literature -> The Early Twentieth Century on Encyclopedia.com 2002   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
After the republican revolution (1911) authors turned away from the classical modes of composition, and many writers (notably Hu Shih and Lu Xun) advocated writing in the baihua vernacular.
The change in Chinese education from preoccupation with the classic literature to scientific and technological subjects reduced mastery of the traditional literary skills as did the abolition of the civil service examinations for official posts, which had been based on a knowledge of the Four Books of the Confucian canon.
The use of characters instead of an alphabet persisted, however; this made older writings accessible and permitted the Chinese, who speak widely different dialects, amounting to different languages, to communicate with one another.
