	Baila - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		"Baila" is the term used to describe a form of dance music popular on the island of Sri Lanka.
		Baila music was introduced to Sri Lanka's mainstream during the early years of the 1960s when singer Wally Bastien (who was also a police officer), began adapting these rhythms to accomodate Sinhala lyrics.
		Thus, Baila music, as its etymology suggests, is deeply rooted in Sri Lanka's colonial history - particularly within the communities established by the Portuguese traders of the 16th century.

		"Baila" offers a very Americanized take on Afro-Caribbean music and Cuban cha-cha, which wouldn't be a bad thing if the group didn't do it in such a corny fashion.
		Even though most of the material has something to do with dance-pop or R&B, "No Pain, No Gain" finds Baila moving into '80s-like pop/rock territory with pleasing results.
		To its credit, Baila is eclectic and far from predictable, and this generally appealing CD makes one hope that there will be many more Baila projects in the future.
