Bailey Gatzert was the eighth mayor of Seattle, Washington, serving from 1875 to 1876.
Gatzert was born in 1829 in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, and emigrated to Natchez, Mississippi in 1849, coming west four years later.
In addition to being mayor, Gatzert was a charter member of the Seattle Chamber of Commerce, served on the Seattle City Council, was president of Puget Sound National Bank and Peoples Savings Bank, and founded Washington's first synagogue, Ohaveth Shalom, which opened in 1892.

Gatzert was partner and general manager of Schwabacher and Co, one of Seattle's earliest hardware and general mercantile stores, later to become the start of wholesale trade in Seattle.
Testimony to Seattleite Bailey Gatzert's influence on the turn of the century metropolis are his namesakes -- Gatzert pier (Pier 64 at the foot of Virginia, 1890), Gatzert Elementary School, the Bailey Gatzert riverboat, and a 1996 stamp of the riverboat issued by the United States Postal Service.
Gatzert was elected mayor of Seattle on August 2, 1875.

Part of the District's plan, according to Pat Sander, Principal of Bailey Gatzert, is that once a child has been assigned to one of the schools, the District provides transportation for that child to and from school anywhere within the Seattle city limits.

Gates will be installed in June after the community group decides which design best represents the neighborhood and school.

 It's elementary and 'new' -- taking a walk to school
It's no surprise that fewer students are walking to school these days, especially considering the busy intersections near some schools and the ever-present parental concerns about "stranger danger" or child abductions.
But for the past year and a half, the pedestrian-advocacy organization Feet First has collaborated with Bailey Gatzert Elementary in Seattle to form a "Walking School Bus" program to get children exercise, promote alternative transportation and pedestrian safety, and better connect families -- particularly immigrant families -- with their schools.
On any given day, dozens of students will gather several blocks from Gatzert and walk to school with their parents and community volunteers, sometimes making stops along the way to pick up more students.
