Bailter Space - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bailter Space is a noise rock group that formed in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1987.
A fascination with the interplay of technology and humanity (often played out in metaphors of space travel) mark the lyrics, which are generally sung in a distant-sounding monotone, though are often delivered in aggressive yells when needed.
Bailter Space's influence can be heard in bands such as Southpacific, (early) Starflyer 59, Juno, Bare Minimum, Volplane/ Bright Channel, Interpol, and High Dependency Unit (H.D.U.).

Bailter Space was originally formed by Alister Parker and Hamish Kilgour in Christchurch, 1987.
Bailter Space packed their bags again, heading for New York and on to Europe to base themselves in Germany.
Reconciling the sides of Bailter Space's music expressed on the two previous albums - the smooth journey of "Thermos" and the futuristic science fright of "Robot World" - the group had arrived at releasing Vortura where sound and song merged into powerful guitar detonations, shadowy voices, and spooky ambient sci-fi.

 Ink 19 :: Bailter Space
New Zealand/New York's Bailter Space made a pit stop in Atlanta and treated a hardy Tuesday night crowd to a thrilling set that veered from blissed-out instrumentalism to flat-out disturbing.
Looking a bit road-weary, Bailter Space took the stage and segued from the earlier instrumental jams with a couple hypnotic songs of their own.
Bailter Space proved to be a wake-up call to those who dismiss "alternative rock" these days -- because under such shopworn labels is where you'll find gems like this band.

 Bailter Space Interview
Even just the name of the band, Bailter Space, traveling different parts of the world, people ask us what it means, but just as many people tell us what it means to them, and that's really interesting to find out.
The "bailter" part of it you won't find in any dictionary, so it's kind of like a blank for people to fill in whatever way they've been touched by the music, becomes what the name means to them.
I think Bailter Space were a bit disappointed by this and the non-demonstrative nature of the upper-midwesterners who did stick around to see them.

Bailter Space - Biography - AOL Music
Led by former Gordons guitarist Alister Parker, noise-rock unit Bailter Space emerged from Christchurch, New Zealand in 1987.
A tour followed, but when the Clean re-formed, Kilgour joined them on a permanent basis; his replacement in Bailter Space was Brent McLachlan, also the drummer in the Gordons.
Despite the restoration of the Gordons' core roster, however, Bailter Space was a clearly distinct entity, their sound more dense and imposing than in their previous incarnation; the trio resurfaced in 1990 with Thermos, mounting a tour of the Northern Hemisphere the following year.

A perspective of Dead C. and Bailter Space as the yin and yang bands of New Zealand is so conceptual it makes my head spin, but think about it: Where Dead C. celebrate the randomness of structured noise, Bailter Space celebrate its precision.
The Bailter Space musical family tree includes members of the Skeptics, the Clean, the Gordons, and that doesn't even begin to attempt to list the amount of production work drummer Brent McLachlan has under his belt.
Domestic reissues of Bailter Space's first three releases, originally issued by Flying Nun circa 1985 1989.

 TrouserPress.com :: Bailter Space
Formed as an outgrowth of New Zealand noise-exploration trio the Gordons, Bailter Space was, in the late '80s, doing something similar to what Sonic Youth sold in the '90s — hard, droning, unforgiving guitar music with occasional lapses into verse/chorus regularity.
The songs have recognizable forms, and there are times when the disaffected vocals actually penetrate, revealing Bailter Space as unexpectedly subversive students of pop.
This aspect of the band's personality is evident on some subsequent projects, and curiously missing from others: it's there on the hooky 1988 EP Grader Spader and in spots on the morose and dissonant Thermos, but absent from the curiously cold Robot World.

Wammo - Bailter Space - Music Reviews
On Wammo, Bailter Space find themselves in that uncomfortable place where what was once fresh and inspiring now starts to feel a little more repetitious and a little less special.
When they do emerge, they're quite welcome, but not as striking as they could be; for example, Parker's high-register singing on "Splat" is quite catchy in the verses, but the song itself isn't as special as the group's earlier work.
They're a good one, to be sure, but the slight retreat from the complexity and studio effects of earlier records makes them a bit less distinct as a result, as does the newfound clarity in Parker's vocals.

Bailter Space close out the '90s in fine form with Solar 3.
While not quite up to the standards of Capsul and Photon, it still shows the threesome ready to begin their third decade of performance with as much energy as they had when starting off as the Gordons.
Perhaps consciously aiming at a return to the bliss-outs of the Thermos/Robot World days, on a number of songs Bailter Space combine the textures of those albums with the more stripped-down and straightforward approaches of later years.

Welcome to the domain of hallucinatory soundscapes inhabited by a band called Bailter Space; please check all preconceived ideas of what legislates rock music at the door.
Over the dozen compositions on Solar.3, (the groups' "seventh or eighth" record, Parker was unsure which) Bailter Space revisit Joy Division's dark, emotional catharsis, Echo and the Bunnymen's propulsive vibrancy, and the Psychedelic Furs' jangly, narcotic pop.
Being part of the original wave of "Alternative" bands, Bailter Space have borne witness to a sound they helped pioneer now invading the third or fourth wave of ambient techno groups.

 RE: [swerve] Bailter Space
Personally, I don't see much of a comparison between Swervedriver and Bailter Space, other than the fact that both have been important bands on the the indie scene over the last ten years or so.
As "SciFlyer" pointed out, Bailter Space has been doing their thing a lot longer than Swervedriver has.
If I had to pick one, Bailter Space is probably my favorite band right now.

Having righted themselves with Capsul, Bailter Space followed up with the equally good Photon EP, blasting off with "Particle Accelerator," which features Parker's raging guitar and spat vocals tumbling over Halvorsen and McLachlan's equally brawling rhythm punch.
"Torch" is quite skeletal for Bailter Space; it's more like a faster version of Codeine or Spain than anything else.
More than a time killer, Photon shows Bailter Space still possessed of rude, vital health.

But, hey, the important thing here is that the live Bailter Space machine creates a huge mess of sound that's simultaneously beautiful, jagged, atonal, and supremely melodic.
While the fact is that most Bailter Space songs don't amount to much more than a few lines sung quietly over a couple of chords played at deafening volumes, the whole package has the ability to transport the unsuspecting listener into the aural equivalent of the center of an imploding star.
Now if somebody would only let me in on what the hell "Bailter Space" actually means, I'd be set.

You can do a lot of aural rubbernecking in a Bailter Space song—listening is like trying to take in an air show set up as a three-ring circus.
Sometimes this trio flies in formation through shearing winds of feedback, but often the players are off in their own air space, performing individual stunts simultaneously.
The band's paratactic arrangements prevent any instrument from being subordinate to the others—including the vocals (Alister Parker's speak-song delivery definitely counts as an instrument).

Creating a sonic wash thick enough to swim in, Bailter Space plays the kind of music that can, like the tides, pick you up and and carry you away.
Over the last 18 years, this trio's members have evolved from pure distortion mongers to more tuneful noise merchants.
But his lyrics, often touching on the emptiness and endlessness of space and oceans, accent the affair with a double dose of wonder and dread.
