Baird's Sparrow: This sparrow breeds from Saskatchewan and Manitoba south to Montana and Minnesota.
Baird's Sparrow: Three to five white eggs, blotched and scrawled with dark brown, are laid in a cup of weed stems and grass, concealed in grass or weeds on the ground.
Baird's Sparrow: Vesper and Song Sparrows are similar, but have rounder heads and longer tails and also lack the yellowish face.

Quite by chance Gus and Deb Ben David, Tim and Sheila Baird and Shelly Baron were on a trip to waterfalls as were Flip Harrington and this writer.
The Ben Davids and the Bairds noted that although they had seen Niagara Falls from the U.S. side in the past, the Canadian side was far more spectacular.
Tim and Sheila Baird spotted red-breasted nuthatches in their yard in Edgartown on Oct. 10 and a white-throated sparrow on Oct. 12.

 BirdForum - to many questions?
It doesn't look boldly enough streaked on the underside to be a song or savannah sparrow, and the head shape and facial markings are wrong for savannah.
It DOES,or rather it can do!I used to think that I'd never master even the commoner waders,now I would have a good idea of what to look for on most vagrant species.Keep at it,take notes on what you see,study the books and don't be afraid to ask others for their opinions.
Learning to I.D. Peeps, Sparrows, Gulls, and the such is all very confusing, Ill just keep looking through these field guides and try to get the hang of the desert sparrows in Arizona for my trip there next summer.

Notable among these was what is according to my references the first January record of Baird's Sparrow for the state and the Yellow-bld. Loon at Caballo.
This is the same area where I had had pipits and sparrows in the fall of 96 and spring of 97 and evidently where Doug, Bruce, Chris, and Kathy had had them in the spring of 96.
Paul found a Sprague's Pipit and Baird's Sparrow (both in sight at once) about 1/2 mile north of the San Luis cutoff.

Breeding had rufous cap like chipping sparrow but note more dark gray in face and malar stripe.
Finer streaking than savannah sparrow, white eyering, white outer tail feathers, no bold eyebrow, white boarder along lower and rear eyepatch.
Somewhat resembles Harris's sparrow but that sparrow does not have the fl streaks on the side and does not have the earpatch outlined in fl and the bill of the Harris's in pink

The only bird of note on this route was a red-naped sapsucker at Pena Blanca L. Mon---Decided to try for a real nemesis bird, Baird's sparrow, which I've seen on its breeding grounds in N Dakota, but never in SE AZ (though not for lack of trying).
In past winter visits, sparrow numbers had only been modest.
One Bairds sat on the ice about 20 ft in front of me, sitting on the ice much like a duck or goose would sit, just soaking up the sun.

 October 2005 Bird Sightings
Highlight of the day was 2 Vesper Sparrows; one in the 'Swan Pool' area of the East Meadow and the other on the eastern edge of the 'Ibis pool' region.
White-crowned Sparrow - 1 Dark-eyed Junco - 20+ Yellow-rumped Warbler - 30+.
SHUTESBURY (from Kevin Weir) lots of Savannah sparrows, chipping sparrows, white throats, song sparrows, small flock of least flycatchers, palm warblers, pine warblers, juncos, phoebes, canada geese and the usual winter residents.

 wingsinflight - SE Arizona & New Mexico July Birding Photos
This July myself and friends returned to SE Arizona as well as Northern New Mexico for 7 days of birding, to look for summer residents & a couple of rare wanderers from Mexico.
We started off by arriving in Sierra Vista, AZ at around 5pm and immediately went to the private residence here where the Plain-capped Starthroat had been appearing approximately every hour for a few seconds.
We arrived during daylight so tracked down the Five-striped Sparrow in the meantime, which perched for great views.

We did find 1 Piping Plover in it's winter plumage with one band on it's left leg (hard to make out the color) and the Red Knot showed off well in very close views at a few times.
Also had 1 Short-billed Dowitcher, 3 or 4 Black-bellied Plovers, many Pectoral Sandpipers, and a boat load of Bairds Sandpipers.
We spent most of time scanning for the buff-breasted, and did not have time enough to look for the Eared Grebe, but Jim at one point thought he found it (as we were leaving and had no time to stop).

On the hike up the mountain the group observed: Northern Flicker, Hairy Woodpecker, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Fox Sparrow, Chipping Sparrow, Black-capped and Mt. Chickadee, Dark-eyed Junco, Warbling Vireo and Hermit Thrush.
In the same general area north of the causeway Kris saw many Baird's Sandpipers, Western Sandpipers, Sanderlings, two Least Sandpipers, and on the way back, a Semipalmated Sandpiper with seven or eight Bairds.
The sparrow flock was primarily Chipping Sparrows with some Brewer's Sparrows, a first year Lark Sparrow and White-crowned Sparrows.

A FOX SPARROW was found in a brush pile near the base of the Vaseux Cliffs along Irrigation Ck Rd(TF,RM).
White-crowned and Chipping Sparrows are numerous in the Potholes area right now, and we were treated to close looks at a Hairy Woodpecker, numerous Yellow-rumped Warblers, a Western Tanager and a speedy Merlin hunting in what turned out to be a bird-rich environment at the end of the road at the Potholes Wildlife Area.
Sightings for Sunday, September 19: A CLAY-COLOURED SPARROW was on the path in the southeast corner of the southeast sewage pond at Iona Island.

Other highlights were a singing Clay-colored Sparrow in the sheltered trees and bushes on the south edge of the woods, again present most of the day, a Yellow-throated Vireo, a calling Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, and a bright Orange-crowned Warbler, as well as at least 18 other warbler species.

In central Nebraska in Buffalo County on the 23rd, an OSPREY was seen 3 miles southeast of Gibbon.
We saw a Chipping Sparrow and two Savannah Sparrows three miles southeast of Gibbon.

 Fall Inland NW Bird Sightings
In the flock of about 40-50 peeps, there were western, least, and at least one BAIRD'S sandpiper, and two SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS still in alternate plummage.
We really enjoyed our visit again to Bunchgrass Meadows, which hosted a good assortment of bird species in addition to a few notable dragonfly species that are noted at this isolated location.

On May 06, at our home southeast of Gibbon, we saw a Field Sparrow, two male Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, lots of Baltimore Orioles including a couple females, only a few Harris's Sparrows, Clay-colored Sparrows and a Lincoln's Sparrow.
In central Nebraska in Boone County on the 9th, a first spring male SUMMER TANAGER was seen 3 miles west of Loretto.

Had a couple of hours to check out the Marshes (140th and 180th) and in between.
Best Year birds for me were: (I haven't been out much yet this year) probable Bairds Sandpiper - a pair working the W. edge of 140th marsh @ Common Snipe - 140th @ N. Harrier - female soared over 140th low.
Bluebird - on wire E. of 140th marsh.
