Bairiki is the only small town on the island of Bairiki, on (Tarawa) atoll.
From Bairiki to Bonriki, all the islands are united by roads and causeways, with no interruption.
In the village there is a small port (the main is on Betio islet) and quite near of Bairiki, but not on the island, an extension centre of the University of the South Pacific.

Meetings with the elders of Bonriki village - the traditional owners of the water reserve - also revealed that the study was unknowingly caught up in a much wider, social issue.
There was an ongoing struggle involving the elders and the government, with the elders seeking a considerable increase in financial and social compensation from the government, over the establishment of a water reserve and an international airport on Bonriki land.
The conflict affected the reponses of the villagers, who thought that the research team were somehow involved in the struggle.

The objectives of the investigation were to involve the people of Bonriki village in the project from the outset to completion, in order to obtain their co-operation in the project and identify any concerns or objections to the establishment of equipment and conducting studies in the Bonriki area.
It was reported that the village was previously self sufficient with food and sold copra but since land had been lost to the reserve and the airport, they had to buy coconuts and depend on money from the government and other sources to live.
It was indicated that the village residents appreciated being consulted and that this had not been done in quite the same way before despite projects of a much greater impact being undertaken in the Bonriki area.

Buariki is the last Village of north Tarawa.
The channel is one of the deepest channels and you have to wade trough knee deep water for a couple of meters.
The next few miles are small villages and channels which you pass by full lowtide.

In the fastest canoes this might be for half an hour or more, and afterwards a long beat home against the Trades with their 'catch', when inevitably some would be spilled and some would be spoiled, but always a little would be saved to give some meaning to the day's endeavour.
On Bairiki, an islet of Tarawa, there was a stone which was considered to be the 'rabata' of the goddess Tituabine.
This deity was the 'atua' (family ghost) of the Bairiki family group, which treated her as a guardian spirit, abstained from eating the flesh of her creature, the Stingray, and made offerings of coconuts and food at full-moon every month to her stone.

At Tarawa we anchored off the village of Betio which is the main port of entry and the capital of Kiribati.
We took a bus trip to the end of the island and as we neared the farthest villages it was greener and cleaner.
The mistranslation was that the Japanese were to fire on the second village to the south of the island where the U.S. military was located, but fired instead on the second village to the north.

It was a marvelous experience for me, living a very simple lifestyle (electricity for two hours a day, collecting and boiling rain water for drinking and cooking, traveling by local outrigger canoe) among beautiful, hospitable people in their Kiribati culture.
I taught in a Catholic boarding school in the village of Taborio right on the ocean.
Of course every village is pretty much right on the ocean because the islands are very small - look this way and you see the beautiful turquoise lagoon contained by coral reef; look that way and you see the beautiful turquoise of the Pacific Ocean.
