The Sonoran Desert (sometimes also called Gila Desert after Gila River) is a North American desert which straddles part of the U.S.-Mexico border and covers large parts of the U.S. states of Arizona and California and the Mexican state of Sonora.
It is one of the largest and hottest deserts in North America, with an area of 120,000 square miles (311,000 square kilometres).
It is bounded on the west by the Peninsular Ranges, which separate it from the California chaparral and woodlands and Baja California desert ecoregions of the Pacific slope.

Baja is always there on the map of the world - one of the oddest shapes; slender, twisted.
It seems far away, but we sometimes forget its size, or that most of it is empty, and that it is not all dirt bikes and dune buggies and marlin fishing.
In fact, I suspected that the Baja Peninsula was nothing how it was presented to us; that perhaps the images of grass-shacks and margaritas in kitschy cactus glasses were isolated to the far northern and southern cities - the places that we wouldn't be going to anyway.
