The La Bajada Trail is approximately 20 miles Southwest of Santa Fe, in the Santa Fe National Forest.
Ranging in elevation from 5,500 feet to a little over 6,100 feet, the trail climbs La Bajada Hill, the original section of the road that served as the main passage from Albuquerque to Santa Fe prior to the building of I-25.
The La Bajada Trail is about 15 miles long and takes approximately 4 hours or so to complete.

Solano became interested in the La Bajada ceremony as an offshoot of her research on Latino popular religion, including devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe (the patron saint of Mexico) and other Latino religious traditions.

La Bajada Hill is the formidable landmark where the Spanish divided their colonies into the Rio Arriba (Upper River) and Rio Abajo (Lower River).
Traversing La Bajada Hill Road was once an arduous trip; however, in the 1930s the Highway Department moved the road three miles to the east to the same route currently used by I-25.
Remnants of the long history of travel up the hill are still visible; petroglyphs, wagon ruts, and the initials of drivers who climbed the hill in the early 1910s and 1920s mark the trail.

La Bajada Hill is but a small section of the snaking cliff at the southern edge of the Caja del Rio Plateau about 20 miles south of Santa Fe.

During the days of early Route 66 it intimidated motorists by its sudden 500-foot drop along a narrow, talus ridden, switch backed road that was hardly more than a trail blasted from rock.
The Fred Harvey company with their Indian Tours was instrumental in having several hairpins curves eliminated and the road widened in places to accommodate their new tour buses in 1925.
When Route 66 was certified in 1926, La Bajada hill became part of the US highway system.

ere is the La Bajada story from Frank Zoretich's (remember him?) collection of columns he used to write for the ABQ Journal, called "Cheap Thrills." (Remember it???) His columns (written before he moved to Florida several years ago) can be found in Cheap Thrills volumes one and two, published 1992 by Journal Publishing Company.
