In sum, the evolution of conjunto directly changed both the function and form of the bajo sexto, from the shrinking of the body of the bajo and the addition of the cutaway, to the creation of what is essentially a new instrument.
If the evolution of the bajo sexto has been driven by changes in performance practice, then it is the traditional makers of the bajo that mediate the heritage of the instrument and its possible forms.
As an integral part of the history of the bajo sexto and conjunto itself, the Macias family stands in a unique position in regard to the evolution of both the music and the instrument.

 Macias Bajo Sexto
The history of the Bajo Sexto is not exactly clear, but by some historian's account, the instrument was first brought to Mexico by the Spaniards.
In the early development of conjunto music, the Bajo was used mainly as a bass instrument in conjunction with the bass chord elements of the accordion.
But later, with the addition of bass and drums in modern conjunto groups, the Bajo players were free to expand on its primary use as a rhythm instrument and played as a solo, melody-line instrument.

In approximately late 1800’s the Mexican population of South Texas and northern Mexico adopted the lively button accordion from the German settlers and combined it with the Spanish guitar, or bajo sexto (a 12-string bass guitar), to develop a new style of music known as conjunto.
The first conjuntos, usually comprised of an accordion and guitar or bajo sexto duo, were formed in the 1920’s.
Though the basic four piece ensemble – diatonic accordion, bajo sexto, bass and drums - continues to be the basis of conjuntos, many additions and modifications have been made by various groups, which individualize their sound.

Although the accordion--specifically the three-row diatonic accordion--is the emblematic instrument of the Texas-Mexican border region, the beat for Tejano dance is provided by the bajo sexto.
The bajo sexto is essentially a kind of guitar, but with two big differences: it's a 12-string, and the whole thing is tuned an octave lower than the common American guitar.
Together the accordion and the bajo are the core of what became conjunto in the 1940's and 1950's, play a similar role in conjunto's Mexican counterpart norteño, and remain potent musical symbols in today's flashy música tejana.
