Bajourou (meaning 'big strings' or 'big tune') is the name given to a strain of Malian (Mali) pop music usually played at weddings and social gatherings.
Though now predominantly electric, its roots were in 60's acoustic music that borrowed patterns from the kora and the donsongoni (a hunting harp/guitar) and transferred them to acoustic guitars.

In most cases, the folk music being revived were not quite extinct, though some hadn't been played for years or were moribund; such cases include the Celtic music of Cornwall and the Isle of Man, for example.
Cuban music: By the 1960s, Cuban music had seen international success in the form of pop-mambo, chachacha and other genres, and many artists were disillusioned with these styles, which were seen as watered-down.
Latvian music: Its traditional long suppressed or appropriated by the Soviet Union, Latvia's kokle (an instrument similar to a zither) was revived and popular in the 1970s, led by Jānis Porikis.

Bajourou have credentials enough for ten groups: Jalamadi Tounkara's guitar is currently the leading light in Mali's Rail band (the group that launched folks like Salif Keita and Mory Kante); Lafia Diabate's voice has graced that band's records, replacing Kante.
The music is a mix of their own local sounds, but with the addition of the band (lots of percussion and guitars, nothing more), you'll find Cuban, African and European touches everywhere, without a hint of popularizing kitsch or electronic silliness.
His music slips carefully along a path laid down by the repetitive motion of the thumb piano and the swoosh of shakers, punctuated by drums (Mar Gueye) and guitar, and on this third Samite album, some touches of accordion and some bass from Bakithi Kumalo.

The recordings are old, in mono and quality is poor, however the music is killer.
The music contained in the recording is a shade mellower then Sigui but still shows off Djelimady's ability to it's fullest.
The idea was to make a fiery, acoustic recording of the Malian music known as "bajourou"- literally "big string" or "big tune." This recording focusses on guitars highlighting intricate exchanges between two of this genre's top guitar players: Djelimady Tounkara and Bouba Sacko.

The zinger was that Connelly said to Alison and I that if Djelimady really liked the guitar, he would "interested in a trade," whereby Djelimady could have the instrument in return for a few publicity opportunities, such as a photograph he could use on his website, a quote, the odd mention in interviews.
Jon Kertzer--a veteran of the Seattle African music scene who currently works with Smithsonian Folkways, KEXP, and others--brought Djelimady, Bamba and I into KEXP to record a half-hour interview and music segment, which is available on the KEXP site (11/1/02: 4:00), and will soon be linked from here.
The way the two old players reinvented classics on the spot, improvising and talking with their instruments even as they honored old tradition, and the way they condensed and stretched time to allow seemingly endless possibilities within a single rhythmic structure--all this and more touched Djelimady deeply.
