Firestone Diamonds acquires mine on Orange River - Firestone Diamonds plc   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
It looks as if AIM listed Firestone Diamonds may be on to something with its acquisition of the Oena diamond mine in South Africa as its vice chairman, Hugh Jenner Clarke was involved in the original discoveries of the Baken, Octha and Lorelei mines on the lower Orange River.
The Oena mine is situated upstream of the Baken mine which is now operated by Trans Hex, South Africa’s second largest diamond miner, and is reckoned to have produced about a million carats in its 30 year life.
Anyway they sold the Oena mine to a firm of South African diamond dealers who fancied their chances as prospectors, particularly when they were told that the average stone recovered by the Barkers had been 2 carats and the biggest 79 carats and the average price per carat in the early 90s was US$880/carat.

Facts and deductions on diamonds - Firestone Diamonds plc
The marine diamonds found off the shores of Namibia, for instance, were released by erosion from the source rock of countless diamondiferous kimberlite pipes in the Southern African hinterland.
These diamonds were transported hundreds of miles to the west coast of Africa by a series of drainage systems that flowed into the sea in the vicinity of the Orange River, which marks the international border between Namibia and South Africa.
The secret of success is to generate cashflow from alluvial diamond mining while spending on exploration for economically mineable diamondiferous kimberlites.

The Namakwa Diamond Project is located in the heart of a world-renowned diamond mining region which encompasses a 1,200 kilometre long coastal zone stretching from Lambert's Bay in the south to the North Rocks in Namibia.
The geological theory underpinning this project - and other major diamond mining operations along South Africa's West Coast - is the theory of the fluvial transport in the geological past of diamondiferous gravels from the rich kimberlites of the interior to the west coast through large drainage systems.
