It is the seat for Elgin County and part of the greater London urban area, gaining its city charter on March 4, 1881.

Balaclava in Renfrew County, Ontario is a near ghost town today, a come down from the bustling lumber town of its heyday.
Balaclava was listed in a popular book on ghost towns by Ron Brown.
Although it makes Balaclava sound like a pristine, deserted ghost town, actually it is just off highway 513 and still has a few residents.

Balaclava eventually caught up to Johnson and had their own post office by 1890 which was operated by W.H. Hunt.
Balaclava had no church whereas their neighbours in Johnson and Silicote did.
Balaclava ceased to exist when, in 1942, the government purchased the land for the purposes of training soldiers in tank warfare and artillery gunning.

The Balaclava Telephone Company was first formed in 1912 with a mandate to build a line that connected to the Bell Telephone Co. in Owen Sound.
The Balaclava Women's Institute was formed in 1926 by 18 ladies who had done volunteer work for the Red Cross during World War I. The organization became well regarded for their volunteer and community efforts.

Four searches were conducted in the Grey County municipality of Southgate (1 in Dundalk and three in the former Proton Township), two searches took place in Wellington County (Erin and West Luther Twp.) and two searches in town of Grand Valley in Dufferin County.
The male was wearing a balaclava, and is described as 5'6" to 5'10" tall.
Members of the County of Wellington O.P.P. Crime Unit, Uniform Branch and the Western Region Forensic Identification Services were called to the scene to assist with the investigation.
