Balad (Arabic: بلد) is a city 50 miles (80 kilometres) north of Baghdad in Iraq.
It is located within the borders of the so-called Sunni triangle; however, Balad is a primarily Shiite town.
Balad Air Force base is also home to Task Force 145, a crack team of the Army's Delta Force, the Navy SEALS, and the British special operation commandos.

I passed through Balad briefly - didn't get to see much, though in my half hour there I did experience one attack.
"By May 2005 the Washington Post reported that plans called for consolidating American troops in Iraq into four large air bases: Tallil in the south, Al Asad in the west, Balad in the center and either Irbil or Qayyarah in the north.
