Information on Specific Species of Baleen Whales   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The Sub-Order Mysticeti (baleen whales) is split taxonomically into 4 families: Balaenopteridae, Balaenidae, Eschrichtiidae, and Neobalaenidae
Balaenidae Right Whales, any of several whales characterized by a large head, baleen plates in the mouth, and absence of a dorsal fin.
Neobalaenidae Pygmy Right Whales only, they are small with a gray body, lacking the striking fl and white markings common in members of the Balaenidae family.

Baleen is a fibrous curtain of material growing from the upper jaw and is used for filter feeding.
The family balaenidae is also distinguishable from rorquals (minke, humpback, sei, fin and blue) by their lack of longitudinal throat grooves which on rorqual whales extend from immediately under the chin to well posterior to the line of pectorals.

Rednova NEWS | Mitochondrial Phylogenetics and Evolution of Mysticete Whales   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
There are currently four recognized families of mysticetes: the right whales (Balaenidae; three to four species), the pygmy right whale (Neobalaenidae, one species), the gray whale (Eschrichtiidae, one species), and the rorquals and humpback whale (Balaenopteridae; seven to eight species).
Although many conflicting arrangements of the families Balaenidae, Neobalaenidae, Eschrichtiidae, and Balaenopteridae have been proposed, there is general agreement that balaenids are the basal lineage of extant mysticetes.
Analysis of a common cetacean DNA satellite confirmed the early divergence of the Balaenidae, but removed the morphologically anomalous Neobalaenidae from their long- held association with this group, suggesting instead a closer association with the Eschrichtiidae and Balaenopteridae (Arnason and Best, 1991; Arnason et al., 1992).
