Topic: Balanced line

Balanced line - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In telecommunications, a balanced line or balanced signal pair is a transmission line consisting of two conductors in the presence of ground, which relies on balanced impedances to minimize interference.
The line is capable of being operated in such a way that when the impedances of the two conductors at all transverse planes are equal in magnitude and opposite in polarity with respect to ground, the currents in the two conductors are equal in magnitude and opposite in direction.
Balanced lines can carry electrical signals farther than unbalanced lines because any noise on the line will not be balanced and thus gets filtered out.

Balun - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A balun is a device designed to convert between balanced and unbalanced electrical signals, such as between coaxial cable and ladder line.
The balanced end of this balun is at the end where the pipe is wired to the braid.
The one at left would normally be used to connect a high impedance source, such as a guitar, into a balanced microphone input, serving as a passive DI unit.

 Balanced Line Technology
Balanced connections are unlikely to provide much protection against RF ingress- both sides of the balanced input would have to demodulate the RF with exactly the same effectiveness for common-mode cancellation to occur.
Apart from balancing requirements, a line-level input, as opposed to a microphone input, is expected to have a reasonably high impedance to allow multiple connections to a single output.
The impedances on each line will be different, but not due to the asymmetrical input impedances of a simple differential amplifier; the hot line impedance is dominated by the output resistance Rs on the hot terminal (100 Ohms) and the cold line impedance is zero as it is grounded at the output end.

A resonant line is not terminated in its characteristic impedance.
With balanced feeder, it is important to keep the line clear of metal objects etc. However, I've just erected an 66 foot doublet fed with 300 ohm 'window' line and, contrary to popular belief, it seems that nothing affects it.
The reason some articles give a feed line length is because a certain length of balanced line for a certain aerial will give an overall acceptable impedance at the ATU on all bands.

Although proper connection to the signal ground is important, it isn't used by a balanced line receiver in determining the logic state of the data line.
A balanced differential line receiver senses the voltage state of the transmission line across two signal input lines, A and B. It will also have a signal ground (C) that is necessary in making the proper interface connection.

Why do I need balanced cables?
A balanced audio system uses a means of 'mirroring' an audio signal, complete with the second signal being the exact opposite of the 'actual' audio signal.
A balanced line uses the 'mirrored' audio that is 180 degrees out of phase, to filter/reject external interference.
When the two lines (hot/cold) are combined at the mixer or other input device, the audio becomes stronger, but the noise is eliminated.

diyAudio Forums - Balanced line questions   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Now, my understanding is that a balanced line system uses three wires, ground, + and -.
The reason regular wiring picks up noise is because the ground line (if it is earth ground) is 100% immune to noise but the signal line is not, therefore the noise causes a voltage difference across the wire and this is audible.
Common-mode means a signal (or more typically noise) which exists equally in magnitude and polarity on both lines, as opposed to differential (or normal) mode where it exists equally in magnitude but of opposite polarity on each line.

Although the modification degrades the "perfect" balance, in reality there is only about a 0.4dB loss of signal when the circuit is connected in unbalanced mode, and this is well within the acceptable range (IMO).

Blue Circle "Music Ring" Balanced Power Line Conditioners by Bob Neill
And I know that power line conditioners and after-market power cords are attempts to - invoking the most useful if crude metaphor - do what the filter on your water spigot does: to purify what goes through it.
Therefore, the line and neutral level noise is lower.
Power line conditioners, if they do what the Music Rings do - and at their price - may be a better investment than that new preamp upgrade or sexy interconnect you're looking at.

Balanced inputs and outputs are used mainly for professional audio and "High-End" HiFi, for example on many CD players and DACs, it has been used in professional audio for many years.
This is because the inherent weakness of unbalanced interconnections is that the shield, which is also a signal conductor, is a path for power line related currents that always flow between equipment grounds.
A balanced connection uses three conductors, two for the signal the twisted pair, and the third, for the shield, the two conductors in the center are twisted pair, one carries the non-inverting signal and the other carries the inverted signal, exactly the same but inverted.

 Balanced Line Driver & Receiver
With this simple project, you can have balanced lines too, simply adapting the unbalanced inputs and outputs of your hi-fi gear to become balanced, and then back to unbalanced at the other end.
An unbalanced line is the type you have on the hi-fi, typically using an RCA connector, and feeding the signal through a coaxial cable.
In contrast, a balanced connection uses two wires for the signal (much like the telephone circuit), with the signal equal in amplitude in each wire, but opposite in phase.
