A balancing lake (also "flood basin") is an element of an urban drainage system used to control flooding by temporarily storing flood waters.
At its simplest, a balancing lake can be constructed by creating a dam across a drain or stream at a convenient valley, with a restricted diameter outlet pipe through the dam.
Willen Lake is one of the largest (400,000 m²) purpose-built stormwater balancing lakes in the UK.

Higher than normal concentrations of metal in lake sediments indicate smelting, an incendiary process that separates pure silver from ore. Abbott and Wolfe found that concentrations of silver began to rise in 1100 C.E., coinciding with the late stages of the Tiwanaku civilization, prior to the rise of the Incan Empire.
Before 1000 C.E., the metal concentration levels in the lake sediments were low and stable, similar to levels found in samples from 2000 B.C.E. to 600 C.E.During smelting, some metal was volatized and blown as an aerosol into the lake, where it settled into the mud.
Once on the lake, they anchored the rafts in 33-feet of water and sunk the coring rods to the bottom of the lake to collect mud samples.

Originally built as a 'balancing lake' for the River Ouzel, Walton Lake was no longer needed to absorb floodwater once Willen and Caldecotte Lakes were created.
The lake was allowed to fill with reeds, creating a very different habitat from the open waters of most of the city's other lakes.
To prevent this from happening the reedbed at Walton Lake is maintained by Parks Trust volunteers and contractors, regularly cutting back blocks of weed to create a diverse mosaic of open water, and blocks of reed of different heights.
