Balangiga is a 5th class municipality in the province of Eastern Samar, Philippines.
The municipality is the site of the Balangiga Attack which triggered the Balangiga Massacre.
This incident during the Philippine-American War remains one of the longest-running and most controversial issues between the Philippines and the United States.

 Balangiga rings bells in austere times
The officially called "Balangiga Encounter" refers to the local event in the morning of Saturday, Sept. 28, 1901, when some 500 native fighters mostly armed with bolos staged a successful attack on soldiers of Company C, 9th US Infantry Regiment, who were mostly eating or lining up for breakfast in their garrison in the town.
Aside from the population loss, the Samar campaign resulted in massive devastation of the rural economic base in terms of hundreds of burned houses, destroyed native boats, and slaughtered carabaos, the Filipinos' draft animals.
In an interview with the Inquirer, Balangiga Mayor Catalina M. Camenforte hoped that the US government would take the initiative to have the bells in Wyoming returned to her town in the spirit of peace and reconciliation.

Presently, the seat of a diocese, Borongan on Samar’s eastern coast was a dependency of Palapag.
In 1854, Balangiga was a visita of Guiuan and remained so until it was separated from its mother parish by the decree of 3 Aprilof this year.
In 1859, 27 Sept., Balangiga was established as a parish in accordance with an episcopal decree of 1 April 1854.

BALANGIGA, Eastern Samar-Hope still runs high among residents of this town that the church bells taken from the belfry here by American soldiers 101 years ago will be returned on time.
The diocese has embarked on a separate effort to convince the Cheyenne Diocese that the bells are the property of the Balangiga church and thus could not be taken as spoils of war.
Many of the residents are hoping that the bells will be given back to Samar, although a few are resigned to the fact that they will not see the historic bells during their lifetime.

BORONGAN, Eastern Samar-Bishop Leonardo Medroso of the Diocese of Borongan has taken the initiative to seek the return of the bells of Balangiga town, Eastern Samar that were taken as war trophies by American soldiers in 1901.
With Balangiga under his jurisdiction, Medroso said he has the responsibility also to assume the initiative to have the bells returned to where they really belong--to the people of Balangiga.
Lawyer Floro Balato Jr., Eastern Samar provincial administrator, told the Inquirer that the highlight of this year's celebration is the inauguration of the Balangiga Encounter Monument in Balangiga town.

Ramon Aspa of the Coast Guard Station said he and his men were conducting search-and-rescue operation to save three other fishermen who have been reported missing shortlty after the baby tornado hit the area.
The three missing fishers and the six rescued fishermen were fishing at about 10 Tuesday night in the Balangiga sea when they were battered by strong winds that caused their fishing boats to capsize.
