Kalinga as a political domain was non-existent during the 300 years of Spanish colonial rule.
The Province of Kalinga is located centrally in the Cordillera region, bounded on the north by Apayao province, South by Mountain Province, east by Cagayan and Isabela and west by the Province of Abra.

Records from the Police Regional Office-Cordillera revealed that the seven robbers wearing camouflage and bonnets flagged down a passenger jeepney with plate number AYC 962 and immediately took away the gold bar from the passengers, most of whom were gold panners.
Both the Balbalan Municipal Police Station and the Kalinga Provincial Mobile Group are conducting hot pursuit operations against the still unidentified robbers who fled by foot towards a nearby mountainous area.
The highway robbery came just as Kalinga Gov. Macario Duguiang said he was planning to request additional policemen to secure the main roads towards Tabuk, the province's capital town.

By ARIS R. A militiaman was killed while nine others, including five civilians, were wounded when an undetermined number of suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels attacked an Army detachment in Balbalan, Kalinga Wednesday morning, reports reaching Camp Crame in Quezon City said.
The fatality was identified as Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) soldier Julius Balaw-As while the wounded were SPO4 Martin Bog-Acon and PO3 Mike Simangon, both members of the Balbalan municipal police station; Sgt. Geronimo Caymo, CAFGU Jonathan Di-ig, and five civilians identified as Pricila Gumanao, Corazon Gumanao, Lydia Tangdol, Adjean Gumanao, and Criselda Gumanao.
All the victims were rushed to the Kalinga Western District Hospital in Salegseg, Balbalan, Kalinga for treatment.
