Balclutha is situated on alluvial flats on the banks of the Clutha River half a mile upstream from the point where the river divides into the Matau and Koau branches to enclose the 10-milelong island of Inchclutha.
Balclutha is the servicing and distributing centre for practically the whole of the lower Clutha basin.
The names Balclutha and Clutha were chosen by the prospective Scottish settlers in 1846 so that the future principal town of South Otago would have an association with the city of Glasgow.

 Saving Parklands Isn't Hard: How We Do It
Balclutha, the flagship and queen of the historic fleet of ships at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park - the nation's only "floating" national park - had just undergone her most extensive refurbishment since she was originally saved almost 50 years ago.
Damaged hull plating was replaced, the masts and yards were restored, the rigging was completely renewed, the decks were sanded and caulked, new ladders were built, over 300 feet of manila lines were put in place and the entire vessel was painted.
Balclutha's leaking main deck was threatening the integrity of the vessel and desperately needed replacing, but the National Park Service didn't have the funding available.

This is not a situation that we have encountered recently on Balclutha but many years ago that particular stay was replaced and wire of 6x19 construction was all that was available.
What we have had to do on Balclutha and other vessels I have worked on is to try to balance historical accuracy with budgetary concerns, the availability and the ability to maintain the chosen material (often with a reduced workforce), and the overall appearance of the completed project.
We hope to be able to replace the heavy rubber hose, which was used around some of the shroud collars during the earlier restorations, with leather in the near future.
