Many of the normal faults of the Balcones Fault Zone are surrounded by zones of highly fractured strata.

The Balcones Fault is a zone of normal faulting in Texas (USA) that runs approximately from the southwest part of the state to the north central region.
The Balcones Fault zone is not active today, and is in one of the lowest risk zones for earthquakes in the United States.
The surface expression of the fault is the Balcones Escarpment, which forms the eastern boundary of the Texas Hill Country and the western boundary of the Texas Coastal Plain and consists of cliffs and cliff-like structures.

Structural Style in an En Echelon Fault System, Balcones Fault Zone, Central Texas: Geomorphologic and Hydrologic ...
Generally, the rocks exposed at the surface west of the fault zone are Lower Cretaceous stiatigiaphic units consisting of resistant limestones, dolomites, and marls; east of the zone, the rocks exposed are Upper Cretaceous, nonresistant chalk and calcareous clay units.
The overall structural grain of the faulting in the ramp is consistent with the regional Balcones fault zone, with the larger-displacement faults having a northeastward orientation, but with the smaller cross faults oriented in all directions.
Not long after Balcones faulting occurred (currently believed to be during the Miocene), the stratigraphic units exposed in the vicinity of the en echelon faults and associated ramp structure in the study area were Upper Cretaceous or younger.

With normal faults, the movement is such that the fault plane dips, usually steeply, toward the side of the fault where the rocks have dropped.
Faults observed at the surface are a warning that the bedrock in an area may be inhomogeneous.
To the west of the fault zone in the Austin area, at depths of 100 to 650 meters (300 to 2000 feet), are Precambrian granites and strongly metamorphosed rocks, and Paleozoic rocks, mostly hard limestones.

The two regions in the San Marcos area are: the Hill Country (also known as the Edwards Plateau) and the Gulf Coast Plain; the Balcones Escarpment divides the two.
Although the Balcones Fault Zone is generally considered to be inactive, some scientists suggest the earthquakes that occured just east of Austin in 1873 and 1902 were caused by movement along the eastern part of the fault system (Swanson, 1995).
The Hill Country was also being eroded and this contributed to the load (the "overburden") on the newly formed coastal plain.

The Balcones Fault Zone is a narrow geologic area that spans the state from the Rio Grande to the Red River and consists of broken rock formations, or faults.
This faulting has displaced the geologic formations within the County causing the older geologic formations to outcrop in the western portion of the County and the younger geologic formations to erode and deposit in the topographically lower elevations in eastern Bell County.
This fault zone is also responsible for the discontinuities of the three aquifers as they extend southeastward and it is these discontinuities that provide the dual characteristics of the Edwards (BFZ) aquifer and control the flow of groundwater in all three aquifers throughout the County.

At the east foot of Mt. Bonnell (away from the river) is the Mt. Bonnell fault, the local major fault of the Balcones fault system, and the abrupt boundary between the American South and the American West.
Thus, high ground west of the Mt. Bonnell fault is due partly to fault motion, and partly to resistance to erosion of the exposed strata.
Fault movement is estimated to have ceased about 13 million years, but that time is not well-established, and the river terrace deposits constrain the fault history.

It is the Balcones that creates the Hill Country, that sets the stage for the Edwards Plateau and the High Plains beyond.
It was during the Miocene era, between 5 and 20 million years ago, that the fault zone in the buried Ouachitas created the Balcones Escarpment.
The escarpment served as a trap for the weather masses that moved in from the Gulf, and as a result the rainfall along the fault zone was intense, eroding the soil along the new stream channels and declivities it carved in the bedrock.

Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) 2007  News Release
This fault is a fracture zone along which the Glen Rose Formation strata were displaced, or slipped nearly 250 feet downward, toward the Gulf of Mexico.
Although the fault was known and had been studied in the 1960s when Canyon Dam was built, no one has had a clear view of it until after the flood of 2002.
In future years, the project is expected to use geomechanical analysis and modeling to hone the oil industry's ability to predict rock deformation in reservoirs before drilling, and the permeability characteristics of fault zones and surrounding rock to improve fault representations in reservoir models.

In general, the movement of groundwater in the freshwater part of the Aquifer is from areas of higher elevation in the southwest toward major discharge areas in the northeast.
