		The Flemish line was opposed by two brilliant composers who were Venetian by birth: Baldassare Donato and Andrea Gabrieli, leaders of the progressive movement tending to striving to enhance the value of local culture.
		The conflict between Chapel Maestro Zarlino and Donato noisily and publicly erupted during the feast of St. Mark, a solemn day of festivities, with the protest of the choristers and their revolt against the higher orders.
		Baldassare Donato's animated opposition continued with the activity of one of his followers, Giovanni Croce, to whom he had taught chant and composition.

		High parts of Donatos pieces are always pleasant and contain the melodies of his compositions.
		His telos as a composer was not to depict the words through the music (although this appears to have started); rather, Donato's music was conducive to depicting emotional timbres.

		In the 1560s, two distinct groups developed within the Venetian school: a progressive group, lead by Baldassare Donato, and a conservative group, led by Zarlino who was then maestro di cappella.
		Friction between the two groups came to a head in 1569 with a dramatic, public fight between Donato and Zarlino during the Feast of St. Mark.
		Members of the conservative branch tended to follow the style of Franco-Flemish polyphony, and included Cipriano de Rore, Zarlino, and Claudio Merulo; members of the progressive group included Donato, Giovanni Croce, and later Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli.

		When Bassano was appointed maestro at the Seminary, he succeeded Donato in the post, the Seminary having been moved to a distance from the cathedral in 1592 and Donato having succeeded Zarlino as maestro di cappell athere in 1590.
		Though preponderantly a composer of secular works, Donato has left us a small quantity of sacred music.
		A number of Masses by Croce --Donato's successors as maestro in 1603--which appeared from 1596 to 1599, indicate that he was the chief representative of the Missa brevis in Italy.
