In the News (Mon 28 May 12)

  CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Baldassare Peruzzi
Peruzzi painted the firmament, with the zodiacal signs, the planets, and other heavenly bodies, his perspective being so skilful as to deceive even the eye of Titian.
While Raphael designed the mural paintings and, it may be, the entire plan for the decoration of the hall, it is certain that the tapestry-like frescoes on the ceiling are to be ascribed to Peruzzi.

Baldassare Tommaso Peruzzi (7 March, 1481—6 January, 1537) was an Italian architect and painter, born in a small town near Siena and died in Rome.
To decorate this villa on the Tiber many artists were employed, and just as the style of the villa in no wise recalls the old castellated type of country-house, so the paintings in harmony with the pleasure-loving spirits of the time were thoroughly antique and uninspired by Christian ideas.
That Peruzzi improved as time went on is evident in his later works, e.g., the "Madonna with Saints" in S.

 Baldassare Peruzzi (Getty Museum)
Though Baldassare Peruzzi's artistic versatility was not uncommon in the 1500s, he was most successful as a draftsman and architect.
Upon arriving in Rome from Siena in 1502, Peruzzi revived illusionistic classical mural painting and painted theater perspectives later used in a treatise on architecture.
When Raphael died in 1520, Peruzzi succeeded him as architect of Saint Peter's basilica in Rome, using drawing as a tool to understand and further develop the existing plans.

British Museum - Baldassare Peruzzi, A Woman and Two Men, an ink drawing
The informal, intimate nature of Peruzzi's portrayal of three figures is atypical, and it is revealing that this drawing was once believed to be by the Venetian painter Giorgione (around 1476-1510) whose paintings are similarly atmospheric and mysterious.
Peruzzi was born in Siena but worked in Rome as a painter and architect; it is possible that this dates from the period when he was working alongside the Venetian painter, Sebastiano del Piombo (1485-1547) in around 1511.
At his death, however, Peruzzi was eternally honoured by being buried next to Raphael in the Pantheon, Rome.

Peruzzi, Baldassarre   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Connection between the real space (architecture) and illusory space (painting), was represented in such works as: frescoes in the Sala delle Colonne alla Farnesina; scenes for Calandria (1514); elegant frescoes of the Cappella Ponzetti in the church S.Maria della Pace (1516); and composed in a mannerist style Presentazione della Vergine (1520) (Rome, S.Maria della Pace).
Peruzzi's first architectural masterpiece was Farnesina (started in 1509), created on the U-plan, according to the Tuscanian tradition.
After the sack of Rome in 1527, Peruzzi returned to Siena, where left both painting and architectural works: construction and decoration of the Villa Belcaro; but his major place of activity still was Rome in 1530-1531 and 1535-1536.

 Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola Summary
Sebastiano Serlio and Baldassare Peruzzi were the leading painter-perspectivists of the time, and both had turned from painting to architecture: both had great influence on Vignola, although his exact relationship with them is not clear.
Peruzzi, who had been an assistant of Donato Bramante, helped to form Vignola's architectural style, and Serlio probably inspired him to write a treatise.
Vignola went to Rome in 1530 and was active as a painter and, from the mid-1530s, as an architect.

History of Art:The High Renaissance, Mannerism
As the result of a rather mysterious agreement between the pope, Baldassare Castiglione, and the artist himself, he undertook to reassert the historical image of the city of Rome as the capital of the Christian world with a vast, ambitious, archeological and construction project.
Yet certain of his works had a strong influence on later architects in the 16th century, and his architectural theories can be said to have been extremely forward-looking.
It is the balance between traditional and advanced thinking that characterizes Peruzzi’s life and career.

Passive ring-shaped (enceinte) fortifications of the medieval era proved vulnerable to damage or destruction by cannonfire, when it could be directed from outside against a perpendicular masonry wall.
Star fortifications were developed by Filarete in the mid-fifteenth century, employed by Michelangelo in the defensive earthworks of Florence, refined in the sixteenth century by Baldassare Peruzzi and Scamozzi and brought to final statements by Louis XIV's military engineer, Vauban.
In the nineteenth century the development of the exploding shell changed the nature of defensive fortifications.
