 Mobile, Baldwin schools get money for construction
Both school systems, along with 74 other districts across Alabama, are sharing a total of $11 million in interest from a $600 million-plus bond issue they jointly took out for various construction projects throughout the state.
Officials in the Mobile and Baldwin school systems seemed surprised to learn about the amount of money this week when the announcement from Riley's office was forwarded to them by the Press-Register.
Baldwin County has a $140 million slate of projects, and Mobile County is about to wrap up $371 million in construction.

 Awards -- The Partnerships in Character Education Project Program
Baldwin County Public Schools (BCPS), in partnership with its parent support organizations, the Circuit Court of Baldwin County, and Alabama Gulf Coast Young Life, an ecumenical faith-based organization, will conduct a four-year, district-wide implementation study of the ShowMe CHARACTER Program and evaluate its impact on school improvement and student achievement.
Expected outcomes are: systemic high quality character education in all schools; school leadership teams that are skilled in data-based planning and ShowMe Character strategies; community involvement in every school; district policies and support for character education.
The Quitman County Board of Education is implementing a character education program that can be integrated into the teaching curriculum in grades K through 8 and which will prove to be culturally appropriate for a small, poor, rural predominantly African American one-school system and community.

 27% Of Baldwin Students Used Drugs
Baldwin system officials are reviewing pages of statistics and charts created through the PRIDE Survey, which sampled students anonymously last spring.
In Baldwin County, about 9,100 students in sixth through 12th grades participated in the survey, which included more than 200 questions about alcohol, drug and tobacco use as well as school violence.
Among the key Baldwin findings: At each of the county's six high schools, the percentages of students who said they had used marijuana in the past year either matched or topped the survey's 31 percent national average.

 AHSAA - Baldwin County Coaches Learn CPR (1-12-03)
More than 115 coaches and teachers of the Baldwin County Public Schools completed the Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillation (AED) course in a class taught by HEALTHSOUTH and the National Center for Sports Safety (NCSS) during the first week in January.
Baldwin County HEALTHSOUTH facilities and the NCSS teamed up to educate the county coaches and teachers in the class held at the Board of Education satellite office in Loxley.
“I applaud Baldwin County schools for its emphasis on the safety of Alabama athletes,” said Lawrence J. Lemak, M.D., world-renowned orthopaedic surgeon and founder of the NCSS.

Franklin County School System Superintendent Ric Ayer is one of five finalists for the position as the next superintendent of Albertville City Schools, a 3,640 student school system in Northern Alabama.
The Albertville school system hopes to have all of the interviews conducted by next week and have a new superintendent in place by Jan. 1.
A retired administrator of the school system is currently serving as the interim superintendent.
