Baldwin was one of General Washington's messengers and was trusted implicitly by the great man. When a surveying party was sent out to determine the line between Pennsylvania and New York one of the number was killed by an Indian.

PETER T. Peter Tower Baldwin was born in Hillsdale County, Michigan on October 5, 1843, as the son of Daniel Baldwin and Sarah Ann (Farr or Farrar) Baldwin, natives of the State of New York.
Daniel Baldwin became a prominent Barry County Citizen serving in a number of positions in the Maple Grove Township government: highway commissioner (1848); justice of the peace (1849); treasurer (1851-52); and director of the poor (1851-52).
In the summer of 1874, the Baldwins migrated to Chestonia, in Antrim County, Michigan.

In the original Township survey by General Simon Perkins for the Connecticut Land Company in 1806 Springfield was set up as an equalizing township, as were the others in the reserve, and contained twenty-five square miles, five miles on each side.
Springfield Township is unique in the fact that it has been part of three counties; originally part of Trumbull County, it became attached to Portage county and was maintained in this relation until the new county of Summit was established in 1840.
