  Edinburgh Railways  -  Balerno Station
Here is a photo of Balerno station, at the end of the line.
It has a train at the platform and is said to have been taken around 1922.
I would give my right arm for a copy because the family waiting for the train are the Williams family who lived at 5 Deanpark Cottages, now a bus-stop.

The first church was constructed in Balerno for the United Associate Congregation in 1829 but a new church was built in 1884 to meet the religious needs of the rapidly expanding population.

Balerno was also served by St Mungo's Episcopal School and all local historians are indebted to the log book kept by the intrepid teacher through the 1880's which gives us such a vivid picture of life in the village in the late 19th century.
These were not comments concerning the quality of education in Balerno; rather they concerned the saga of the building of Balerno High School, a story that ran and ran.
The dedication and determination of the Balerno High School Action Group and the Balerno branch of the Resident's Association should be acknowledged and applauded.

Balerno Bowling Club is situated in the heart of Balerno Village which is 9 miles west from the city center of Edinburgh.
The club can be found by driving west from Edinburgh along the A70 Lanark Road to Balerno; turning left at fork junction at Bridge Road then continue to the small roundabout and turn left then left again along Ladycroft Road.
Balerno Bowling Club was founded in 1885, and is a very famous Scottish Bowling Club, through the years; our members have distinguished the club, by winning numerous District, Scottish and National titles.

The Pentland Singers is a community choir in Balerno, South West of Edinburgh, open to anyone who enjoys singing.
Our Summer Concert is on the 6th and 7th June 2007, 7.30 in Balerno High School.
We normally have two concerts per year, in December and June, and the music we sing is interesting and varied in style.

While the Balerno High School player fully deserved to be sent off for kicking and punching his opponent, who was lying on the ground after winning the ball in a fair tackle, to send off the St Augustine’s midfielder - who was blameless in the incident - was grossly unfair.
After receiving his marching orders the culprit stood on the Balerno sidelines with a bottle of water in his hand, but the Saints midfielder was visibly upset at being sent off - and he had every right to be.
At the very least, the Balerno High School boy responsible for causing the trouble during the game should be made to write a letter of apology to the player he attacked.

Until 1976 it occupied a nissen hut in Balerno.
When the new bypass road was built round the older part of the village, the Council decreed the hut an eyesore and it was removed.

 SWT Reserve : Red Moss of Balerno
The Red Moss of Balerno is one of only twenty raised peat bogs still surviving in the Lothians.
The bog is 6m deep in places and has all the characteristics of a raised bog — its domed top is covered by heather, cotton grass and varieties of sphagnum, with the drier margins fringed with trees.
Take buses 44 or 66 to the terminus in Balerno; it is about a mile (uphill) along the Mansfield road from there.

 Edinburgh Green Belt Trust
This small community woodland within the grounds of Balerno High School was planted 12 years ago by the Balerno High School Community Wildlife Garden Group and has been maintained by the Community group and school pupils ever since.
The woodland will continue to be managed by this Community group working with Balerno pupils and the ‘Occasional Volunteers’ group.
Next steps are to construct a more effective drain at the top of the steps leading down to the woodland and continue management so that the woodland will be a resource for the community, a haven for wildlife and a pleasure for all those who visit it.
