This minor road leads you to the landward end of a 350m long causeway built in 1962 to connect the island of Baleshare with North Uist.
Most of the island's small population is congregated along the eastern shore overlooking North Uist, or in a line of crofts and cottages that straggle along a road running the length of the northern half of the island.
Baleshare means east township and the island was the first in the Western Isles to turn kelp collection into an economic activity.

 Baleshare Causeway
Built in 1962 by William Tawse Ltd contractors with Sir Alexander Gibb as consulting engineers, it completed the initial phase of causeway construction in the Uists, then run by Inverness-shire County Council.
The link with the main island has helped maintain Baleshare's population which stood at 55 in 1991.
It had fallen from 67 ten years earlier but it is significant that other formerly inhabited islands which failed to get fixed links for example, Taransay and Scarp became deserted after 1962.

My objective was a private hostel next to the island of Baleshare and after loading up in a fortuitously found mini supermarket and supplementing this with a pack of Hot Smoked Salmon from a smoking workshop at the side of the road, I arrived at a small but very comfortable hostel next to the sea.
The owner called in at about 9:00 pm and commented how he had earlier seen me speeding past as he worked on one of his crofts.
The next morning I toured Baleshare with curlew and oystercatchers swooping alongside me before heading south with that lovely wind behind me as I cycled through the low lying land and lochans of Benbecula and into South Uist.

Four sites were then sampled (the sand-cliff sites of Baleshare, on the island of the same name off the west coast of North Uist and Hornish Point, South Uist and the deflation sites of South Glendale, South Uist and Newtonferry, North Uist) within a rigorously-defined research framework.
Tapestry excavation, that is the excavation and recording of a strip of deposits along an exposed face, was the preferred method of investigation because it did not expose any more of the site to erosion than had previously been exposed.
At Baleshare, the deposits investigated were chiefly later Bronze Age; following abandonment (roughly 200 radiocarbon years) of the Period I cultivated soil Period II represented extensive, manured, cultivated fields in the vicinity of a settlement now lost to the sea.

They had lived for generations on Baleshare - a tidal island off the west coast of North Uist.
The Baleshare crofts comprised on average 10 to 15 acres - large enough by island standards - but incapable of maintaining five families.
The normal pattern was for one son to remain on the croft and the others to move elsewhere, but in this case the whole family group had decided to move to Cape Breton.

For the Seil island group, the 1991 figures are for the combined area covering the islands Seil and Easdale, while the 2001 figures cover only the island of Seil itself.
