 Military attacks MILF lairs, ... - May 19, 2003
Trifonio Salazar, commander of the 1st Infantry Division in Zamboanga del Sur, said the military operation in the Zamboanga peninsula, particularly in the Sipakit complex located within the boundaries of Sibuco, Sirawai and Siocon towns and in areas near Baliguian town, lasted up to the late hours of Saturday.
But he admitted that MILF forces in Lanao del Norte, particularly in the towns of Kauswagan, Munai and Piagapo, and in the Buliok complex in North Cotabato had been subjected to military bombardments.
Lanao del Sur Congresswoman Faysah Dumarpa said she was worried over the increasing number of civilians being displaced by the military operations in the Lanao provinces.

ZAMBOANGA CITY — Chairman Fortunato Battad of the Professional Regulations Commission’s Board for Professional Agriculturists (BFA) has announced the approval of a PRC resolution designating Zamboanga City as additional venue for the conduct of the licensure examination for Agriculturists (IEA) set for July 7-9, 2004.
She said the selection of Zamboanga as additional venue of the LEA will benefit agriculture graduates from state and private tertiary schools in region 9 and Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
The report said the truck was bound for the adjacent mountain town of Baliguian when it developed a mechanical trouble while negotiating a downhill curve causing the driver, a certain Danilo, to lose control of the wheel.

A TOP environment official is giving the "royal treatment" to big-time loggers in Zamboanga del Norte, hindering the campaign to stop all forms of logging in the province, according to Gov. Rolando Yebes.
Zamboanga del Norte created the task force to protect its people from killer landslides that could result from denuded forests.
Zamboanga del Norte has around 100,000 ha of forest cover, mainly in Sibuco, Siocon, Sirawai and Baliguian.

ZAMBOANGA CITY (French Careon / 28 Mar) Four US soldiers stationed in Zamboanga City donated blood Tuesday to help save the life of a three-year old Filipino girl suffering from anemia, her family and doctors said.
The girl, Donneth Silo, has been confined at the Zamboanga Medical Center (ZMC) here after her family rushed in Zamboanga City early this month from their hometown in Baliguian in Zamboanga del Norte province after local doctors diagnosed her suffering respiratory distress.
Her family said the girl is also suffering from typhoid fever and pneumonia and that she badly needed the rare blood type A RH negative.

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has lined up different activities for the observance of the Philippine Eagle Week that reeled of Sunday, as it tries to protect the country's national bird thriving in three provinces of the Zamboanga Peninsula Region.
These are Mount Kulabog, Lakewood; Mount Linogon, Bayog; Mount Timolan, Kumalarang, all in the Province of Zamboanga del Sur; Mount Baliguian, Baliguian; Gutalac Mountain Ranges, Gutalac, all in Zamboanga del Norte; and Mount Hayop, R.T. Lim in Zamboanga Sibugay.
Bisquera said the Philippine Eagle is endemic in the Philippines and is known as the largest eagle in the world with a wingspan of two meters, height of one meter, and weight of up to eight kilograms each.

The government has blamed the MILF, which is observing a ceasefire with the government, for attacks in the provinces that left at least three people dead and seven others wounded over the weekend.
Officials said suspected separatist rebels opened fire on a passenger jeep in a village in Kauswagan town in Lanao del Norte province, killing one person and wounding five others.
Guerrillas were also accused of being behind a recent ambush of a truck owned by the Canadian mining firm Toronto Ventures Inc. Pacific (TVI) in Baliguian town in Zamboanga del Norte province, killing 13 passengers and wounding a dozen others.

He did not say why the military suspected the MILF, except that the remote village of Baliguian in Zamboanga del Norte province on Mindanao island, where the attack took place, is a known stronghold of Muslim rebels.
Kabalu said MILF forces pulled out of Zamboanga del Norte in June after troops killed a key leader of the Muslim extremist Abu Sayyaf group, which also operates in the province.
