  ArchAtlas: Tellspotting: Balikh
The Balikh river runs from north to south, in between the middle Euphrates to the west and the Khabur to the east, running roughly parallel with both of them.
The well-watered northern parts of the Balikh valley form a stepping-stone in the east-west corridor of the northern Fertile Crescent, between the other two rivers, as well as a north-south axis in its own right.
The railway follows the frontier with Syria, which is the roughly horizontal double line at the base of the map.

Tell Sabi Abyad   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
In the upper Balikh valley of northern Syria lays the prehistoric mound Tell Sabi Abyad (Arab for ‘mound of the white boy’).
A branch of the Balikh river (called the Nahr et-Turkman) is believed to have once run along the side of the complex but is now situated west of the mounds, partly due to its course being changed as time passed by the villagers of Hammam et-Turkman for irrigation purposes.
The Balikh stone assemblages from Sabi Abyad reflect a domestic village situation and relate to the site’s geographical location, between the Levant and Mesopotamia, indicating the extent of the trade networks due to Sabi Abyad having contact with both areas.

Raqqa lays at the confluence of the Euphrates and its tributary, the Balikh, in north-central Syria.
The modern Euphrates and Balikh Valleys are intensively cultivated, and irrigated agriculture has been practiced from at least the Bronze Age.
The Balikh Valley north of Raqqa has traces of settlement from the Neolithic onward, while Tell Bi'a, northeast of Raqqa, was occupied from the third millennium B.C. To appreciate the city's strategic location and its broad landscape setting, remotely sensed imagery has been used.

The lowest level is provisionally thought to be part of Balikh IIA on the basis of parallels between the ceramics found there and those found at sites such as Tell Assouad.
The upper three levels or Balikh IIIB date from the Halaf at around 5100 – 5000 B.C. These levels are characterised by an open arrangement of circular and rectangular structures.

 1995-96 JAZIRA PROJECT ANNUAL REPORT
By the close of the 1994 field season a large portion of the central Balikh Valley had been mapped and checked in the field.
Part of the 1995 field season was spent "in the footsteps of Mallowan," examining sites and geomorphology in the vicinity of former sources of the Balikh River at 'Ain al-'Arous and Tell Abyad (located a little to the north of the northern limit shown in fig.
Part of the 1995 campaign was therefore aimed at examining the central Balikh Valley downstream of the verified canal in order to trace its lower reaches, together with sites that were apparently dependent upon it for irrigation water.

To Sir Max Mallowan the Balikh Valley in northern Syria (near present day Raqqa) was something of a backwater, so one may wonder why I spend most of my summers baking in the relentless heat in a bare bleak valley devoid of trees and most wildlife.
Despite their obvious differences, however, similarities can be found and here I will attempt to illustrate one theme that links the two areas: that of agricultural technology, and the ability of human communities to harness it to their own advantage.
The crucial data derived from a section across the Balikh River, exposed some twenty kilometers downstream by engineers who were constructing a new canal from Lake Tabqa, which showed a broad channel cut into the alluvium of the Balikh adjacent to the substantial Bronze Age pile of Tell es-Seman (fig.

The city has been definitely located in upper Mesopotamia, between the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers, in the Balikh valley and can be found on the site of the modern Harran in Turkey.
It has been shown that Harran was a pilgrimage city, for it was a center of the Sin cult and consequently closely related to the moon-god cult of Ur.
After indicating a stay of indeterminate length in Harran, the Bible says only that Terah died there, at the age of 205, and that Abraham was 75 when he took up the journey again with his family and his goods.

A Directory of Wetlands in the Middle East
The main source of water for the lake was the spring of Ain al-Arus; the marshes to the north of the lake were fed directly by branches of the Balikh River.
However, in the autumn of 1984, the lake was completely dry, and by 1992, the lake, marshes, spring and river itself were all dry because of diversion of water for irrigation on the Anatolian Plateau in Turkey and pumping of groundwater for irrigation in Syria.
Disturbances and threats: The drainage of wetlands in the Balikh valley and the conversion of steppe to rain-fed and irrigated farmland, with associated intensification of agriculture, use of agrochemicals and increased levels of human disturbance, are critical problems.

This landscape survey of the Balikh Valley in Syria straddles the limit of rain-fed cultivation.
By coupling the evidence from such features with archaeological site survey, I suggest that water supply in the Balikh River constrained total settlement, and therefore population, to a limited size.
During the phase of nucleated Early and Middle Bronze Age settlement, nodal settlements formed a focus for the limited pattern of irrigation canals.
