Balisong is a tagalog (Filipino dialect) word, originated from the Batangas province (south of Manila, Philippines islands).
Balisong means "broken horn" and refers to the mobile handle which protect the blade when closed.
Several people are employed to prepare and insert the various inlays used to decorate a balisong and put together the blade, the handle and the latches. The blade of a balisong is made from several materials depending on the quality required by the manufacturers.

The balisong is one of the most brilliantly designed knives: It's handles act as the knife's sheath, and once open the balisong is one of the few folding knives almost as strong as a fixed blade.
The balisong has a rich history dating back at least to the 19th century, and is used in Filipino martial arts.
Because balisongs have been stigmatized by law enforcement and movies, and because the design is often confusing or too "fancy" for the typical sportsman, balisongs are made in much fewer quantities than other kinds of pocket knives.

While the newer balisongs are all made with adjustable pivot pins, the older generation of balisongs utilized what's referred to as "hidden pins." These pins are ground flush with the handle surface so it appears that there are no pins present.
The kicker on a balisong refers to an area on the blade that prevents the blade from contacting the channel inside of the handle which could result in damage to the blade.
Some balisongers choose not to use a latch and therefore go "latchless." That is, they either purchase production knives without latches, have custom makers make their balisongs without latches, or remove the latch from an existing balisong.

We conclude that the decision to deny importation of Taylor's Balisong knives in 1985 was not essentially inconsistent with the September 28, 1982 ruling and that it was not arbitrary or capricious.
In support of their argument that the seizure of Taylor's Balisong knives was based upon a rational interpretation, appellants rely on the legislative purpose of the statute, and cite to Precise Imports v.

 Balisong-Canada
Literally translated from Tagalog (Ta-gal-og; a Filipino dialect), balisong means "broken horn" as the original balisongs were roughly comprised of recycled knife blades attached to two hollow handles carved from animal horn.
This nickname reflects the motion of a balisong as it is being manipulated (the swinging handles often resembling the wings of a butterfly as it flutters about).
Today, the design and anatomy of the balisong has literally remain unchanged (why mess with success?) and although balisongs are now produced with more elegant woods and finer materials such as titanium, carbon fiber and micarta, it still holds the traditional design of a single knife blade and two swivelable handles.

Not only can a balisong be opened or closed with one hand, but that task can be accomplished with a flair that is totally unique to the balisong.
You may reasonably ask, "If the balisong design is so great, then why are they so uncommon?" Well, unfortunately, in the late 70's and early 80's, balisongs were often portrayed in TV and movies as weapons of criminals and bad-guys.
