The Balivanich Regeneration project aimed to transform a deserted military housing estate into a desirable residential area.
Balivanich Park is only the second park to be provided in the Western Isles and was opened on by Alasdair Morrison MSP and Calum MacDonald MP.
By working with the community, and gifting areas of land for the provision of these facilities, community groups have been formed, which have access to other funding sources and they are now working with us for the long-term benefit of their community.

Having said that, Balivanich has it's origins some 1500 years ago and there are some early Christian ruins dating back to this time.
The main road on Benbecula runs from Gramsdale in the north, round the coast to Balivanich and then to Lionacleit in the south.

Rona and Marina spent the day with Balivanich School on Monday 30 th May. The pupils at Balivanich School already knew a lot about recycling but wanted to know what happened to the recyclates after they put them in the recycling bank.
Many of the pupils had been to the Uist Community Riding School and met Corrie the horse who is allergic to dust mites in her straw bedding.
All the pupils at Balivanich School were very well behaved and the Waste Aware Team look forward to visiting Balivanich School again.

Pictures taken by Kenneth MacLeod (Coinneach Dhomhnaill ‘ic Choinnich), who was headteacher of Balivanich School during the 1930s have been donated by Ian MacLeod, his son.
The exhibition held at Nunton steadings showed through a selection of documents and photographs how this campaign progressed from 1933 to 1938.
The work of the committee members and in particular Father O'Regan and Kenneth MacLeod, the headmaster at that time of Balivanich school, shows their dedication to the improvement of the quality of life for the residents of Benbecula.

 Western Isles Area Waste Plan
The Waste Aware Western Isles Campaign will be launched in the second week of December to coincide with the launch of a collection scheme for cans, bottles, plastics and paper in all main Comhairle Offices throughout the Western Isles.
This post would be the second Community Waste Awareness Officer post to be established and will be based in Uist initially at the Balivanich office and subsequently at the new waste process plant which is due for construction in 2005/06.
The new team member will support the Waste Aware Western Isles Co-ordinator and help to develop and implement a community and business waste education and awareness campaign and promote high levels of participation in existing and new Comhairle waste management services throughout Uist and Barra.

If my memory serves me well, his classes in Daliburgh were set up in the late 1950s and ran for a few years.
But with Fr Calum's translation to another parish, things changed and I never again danced a 'Paddy Bah' (as I imagined it was spelt) other than when showing off during an Eightsome Reel at the Balivanich Gym.
I say all this in an attempt to excuse my limited knowledge and appreciation of the art of dancing.
