Balkan Airlines, the national carrier of Bulgaria, has indicated that its aircraft will remain grounded until at least 20 February.
Balkan Airlines was grounded on 14 February by Zeevi Holdings Group, the carrier's majority shareholder, which claimed in a filing with the International Court of Arbitration in France that the Bulgarian government owes it USD230m in compensation for missing assets and for defaulting on commitments made during the sales deal.
Bulstrad confirmed that Balkan Airlines had not paid its policies for 2000 or 2001 and indicated on 16 February that it had not yet considered filing an insolvency suit against the airline.

According to Balkan Airline's court-appointed administrator, Ralitsa Topchieva, a European consortium has indicated interest in acquiring a majority share in Bulgaria's Balkan Airlines and restoring its operations.
In March, a Sofia court began insolvency proceedings against Balkan Airlines after local insurer Bulstrad, controlled by Dutch-based TBI Holding, filed a claim for $11 million.
To retain its slots at international airports, Balkan Airlines will resume regular flights to London this week and intends to resume flights to Dubai and Moscow starting in mid-May. Cargo flights, which have been very profitable for the airline, will resume in mid-May as well.

In Feb, 1994, my son and I flew roundtrip JFK NY to Sofia on Balkan Air.
On return we were diverted to Toronto because US East Coast was snowed in.
Balkan personnel were very helpful in getting us alternative flights back to States, and we arrived home one hour later than we'd been scheduled to through NY.

We took a group of 15 to Bulgaria in 1993.
Balkan Air lost 2 reservations, denied boarding to one woman, lost 1 set of luggage, found it and sat on it until the woman was ready to leave, causing her to have to buy new clothes and stuff for the trip, and very rudely denied all compensation.
Needless to say, we will never fly Balkan again.

Zeevi Holdings bought a 75 percent stake in Balkan Airlines in June 1999 for USD 150,000.
"The grounds for the suit are a lack of cooperation towards preserving the position of Balkan as a national carrier, the misrepresentation of facts in the privatization contract, and a failure to report on tens of millions of dollars of debt before signing the deal."
