The emergence of this city to replace the importance of Balkh could be attributed to the existence of the Shrine of Hazrat-e Ali the fourth Caliph of Islam (based on myth).

Sayeed Yusuf Rahmani, the head of Balkh's Department of Education, says the Education Ministry has ordered the closure of more than half the schools in the province: "We have 32 schools in Balkh District, but only 13 schools are allowed to function; 19 schools will be closed.
Shakilo Qaderi, a teacher at Balkh's Sino school, says even with an unreliable salary she was thrilled to be able to return to her profession after almost a decade.
The ministry says under the circumstances, it has no plans to close any schools and that the announcement in Balkh and other provinces was the result of a misunderstanding between the ministry and the provincial education departments.

The Afghan Interior Ministry rejected reports that troops from the Balkh Province in northern Afghanistan have arrived in the western Herat Province, Afghanistan Television reported on 26 August.
Ahmad Ayyubi, spokesman for Ghor's Public Council, told AIP that the "dispatch of forces from other provinces to Herat is a negative action and we are strictly against it." According to Ayyubi, sending troops from other provinces will only complicate the situation, and only efforts "in line with the central government's instructions" can be helpful.
