Ballpoint pen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The pens have an internal chamber filled with a viscous ink that is dispensed at the tip during use by the rolling action of a small metal sphere (0.7 mm to 1 mm in diameter); the ink dries almost immediately after contact with paper.
The ball point pen was invented in 1938 by the Hungarian journalist Laszlo Biro, who noticed that the ink used in newspaper printing dried quickly, leaving the paper dry and smudge-free.
Early pens were notorious for leaking, giving rise to the 'pocket protector', but changes to the composition of the ink have largely made this a thing of the past.

 Telescopic ball-point pen - Patent 6942411
When the pen is in use, the frontal axial portion and the rear axial portion are moved away from each other, thereby disengaging the push rod from the sliding tip portion, so that the sliding tip portion is retracted to a position to expose the tip of a ball-point pen refill.
The present invention provides a telescopic ball-point pen in which the telescopic motion is effected by rotating components that are screwed or threaded onto each other, so as to permit high-yield machining and relatively easy assembly of the pen.
When the pen is extended, a ring 18 strikes a stopper 17 so as to stop the extension movement, and at that time the projection 14 of the external thread 13 is engaged with the terminal end lock portion 12′ of the internal thread 11 to prevent any inadvertent extension or shortening movement.

Points A, B, and C in the diagram are price points.
Technically, the price elasticity of demand is low (inelastic) at a price lower than the price point (steep section of the demand curve), and high (elastic) at a price higher than a price point (gently sloping part of the demand curve).

Ballpoint Pen History - Invention of the Ballpoint Pen
The rough "ball" at the end of the pen acted like a metal sponge, and with this improvement ink could flow more smoothly to the ball, and the pen could be held at a slant rather than straight up.
For the pen to regain the public’s favor and trust, somebody would have to invent one that was smooth writing, quick drying, nonskipping, nonfading, and most important didn’t leak.
The principle of the ball point pen actually dates to 1888 when a patent was taken out by John J. Loud for a product to mark leather, however this patent was not exploited commercially.

Reading the thread gives a clearer picture in that it appears this flaw only affects certain models of lock which use a rounded key mechanism and the type of pen used must be pretty specific, but if you have one of the locks in question it’s ridiculously easy to open them using the method described.

Unfortunately, I am having difficulty relocking it with the pen and now the key does not go in either because the lock is turned.
