The ballata may be classified as a ballata minore since it has a two-line ripresa (the first two lines).
The ballata is also missing the text for the second piede and the volta (which would have the same music as the ripresa).

Genres of music in the Trecento
The ballata's name is derived from the Italian verb ballare (to dance), and they are so called because they often accompanied a dance.
It seems likely that the ballata was essentially monophonic during the thirteenth century, but began to appear in polyphonic settings, usually for three voices, during the Trecento (Yudkin, p.
The ballata is composed of two sections, solo verses alternating with a choral refrain.

Trecento-Madrigal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The form at this time was probably a development of connoisseurs, and sung by small groups of cognoscenti; there is no evidence of its widespread popularity, unlike the later kind of madrigal.
By the end of the 14th century it had fallen out of favor, with other forms (for example the ballata, the virelai, the rondeau) taking precedence, some of which were even more highly refined and ornamented.
The center of musical activity apparently moved at this time from northern Italy to France, particularly Avignon.

Poetilandia - LA BALLATA   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)

 The Second Circle
By the latter half of the century, composers began to favor the ballata over the nearly forgotten madrigal (an ornate duo or trio on a fanciful text) and the caccia (a canonic song on a lively outdoor theme), and it became artfully stylized.
In spite of the foregoing analysis and classification, the fact is that a ballata by Francesco, whether early or late, simple or complex, in two voices or three, is unmistakably his and no other's.
And the miracle is that within each ballata Francesco creates a unique musical and emotional world, consistently transcending the formulaic structure, with the music perfectly matched to the mood of the text.

The poem usually has a rhyme scheme of abba for a ripresa (reprise), and a stanza of cdcdda or cdcddeea, though there is much variation between subtypes of frottola.
Most likely the poetic forms are descended from the fourteenth-century ballata, though the music shows a startling simplification from late fourteenth-century practice.
Musically, the frottola avoids contrapuntal complexity, preferring homophonic textures, clear and repetitive rhythms, and a narrow melodic range.
