Ballblazer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ballblazer is a 1985 computer game created by Lucasfilm Games (later LucasArts Entertainment).
It was originally released for the Atari 8-bit systems, such as the Atari 800 and the Atari 5200.
Ballblazer was created by the Lucasfilm Computer Division Games Group.

Ballblazer was one of the first titles from Lucasfilm's Games Division and was popular on other systems such as the Atari 5200 and Commodore 64, but really shines on the 7800.
Ballblazer is a very quirky title for the 7800 that’s more than another “shooter” or “maze game” for the console.
Ballblazer is set in the year 3097 and centers around a game in which each player steers a Rotofoil hovercraft on a field that resembles a large, green checkerboard.

 Ballblazer - videogame classics
Ballblazer is, essentially, a one-on-one soccer match set in outer space.
Ballblazer remains a brilliant example of a videogame at its most basic, while still offering an innovation or two.
Ballblazer never needed to be "modernized," it was modern to begin with.

Granny Vinnie Reviews Ballblazer for the Atari 7800
Regardless, the game of Ballblazer in its most basic form is a variant of the game of soccer: shoot a ball through your opponent's goal.
Ballblazer is another one of those "7800/Atari" only games that are both quirky and unique.
Ballblazer really is just Sci-fi air hockey from the paddle's point of view....take away the drops of sweat splattering the playing surface and the loud CLANKS of the discs slamming into the goal.

Unfortunately this partnership was to be short lived as their first two 5200 games, Ballblazer and Rescue on Fractalus, would be their last.
Although the scaling and movement isn't quite as smooth as it is in the 7800 version, the 5200 does a great job of keeping the speed at a high level.
Ballblazer was one of only two games released in the white Lucasfilm-Atari style boxes, and in an odd quirk the cart label doesn't seem to mention the name of the game anywhere!

It's hard not to be excited by LucasArts' triumphant remake of the Commodore 64 classic Ballblazer.
Filled with everything that made the original great, along with better graphics, sound, and control than the Commodore ever could have delivered (yes, I know it's sacrilege, but it's true...), Ballblazer Champions has everything that a remake could want.

For those who are unfamiliar the game, Ballblazer is a mechanized sport of the future that matches two athletes, each riding a light and maneuverable craft called a rotofoil.
Each side's rotofoil cruises over the checkerboard playfield in a first-person view, trying to capture an elusive ball and either carry or blast it through the other contestant's goal pylons.
And the tremendous music and sound quality that was a trademark in prior versions of Ballblazer has been significantly watered down.

The thought of someone with the tremendous creative resources of George Lucas getting in on the action was enough to excite many gamers - particularly those who, around 1984, were deluged in the kind of mediocre titles which brought the video game business to its knees.
Anyone trying to learn to play Ballblazer against a computerized opponent is likely to become discouraged very quickly; two players can take their time with it.
If you want to glean the most information out of the docs, you have to have the patience to read through all of the story, the jokes, and pick out what parts of the text are actually relevant to playing the game.

I never really got the point about Ballblazer, and certainly never understood the accolades heaped upon it.
Sure, the graphics were nice enough (for their time, at least), but I always felt the gameplay was lacking.
Otherwise, grab some snacks (hedgehog flavour crisps or monster munch will do fine), slip on a pair of comfy leg warmers, pop "Crockett's Theme" on the stereo, and get ready of a 900mph trip dowm memory lane.

Although relatively simple, Ballblazer's graphics are pleasing to the eye and never seem to suffer from slowdown.
Unfortunately, it's obvious that the company was forced to make a few decisions between graphics and game speed, so every now and then you'll find yourself confronted by some large, ugly pixels.
In addition to being a great game on its own, Ballblazer also comes through with the all important head-to-head play - greatly adding to the game's long term play value.

Ballblazer Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Ballblazer was one of Lucasfilm's first games, and suprisingly enough, it didn't actually have anything to do with Star Wars!
The old Lucasfilm department was interested in new graphical styles, such as fractals (as seen in Rescue on Fractalus), and this game is graphically interesting because it is a first-person view sports game, but the graphics do a great job of simulating the sense of speed in the game.
Extra options for difficulty would have been a nice addition to the game, but they aren't sorely missed.

Among our innovations in game design is an increased focus on sound and music, One example is the music score for BALLBLAZER which not only responds to game-play and provides vital status cues, but is also constantly improvised by an algorithmic composition scheme.
This use of music that never repeats itself, responds to game-play, and carries information is a first in the industry (and even now is only challenged by Microsoft on the hugely more-powerful Xbox).
It came in a sexy fl box and included 8x10 glossies of game models, half a dozen press releases, fact sheets, and even a cassette tape of the Theme from BallBlazer, "Song of the Grid." More about the Press Kit here.

The Ballblazer riff is, of course, one of the very few available SIDs that have sufficient hook for pop tracks, and also to carry the kind of vocals in this track.
