Welcome to the U.S. Army Research Laboratory
Researchers funded by the Army Research Laboratory’s Army Research Office have demonstrated what was once thought impossible: the speed of light can be slowed, halted entirely, or in some cases, even reversed.
However, researchers have long recognized that it is sometimes important to slow this speed, and consequently, recent breakthroughs in “slow light” research have been deemed exciting.
Researchers at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, demonstrated the ability to reduce by a factor of two light speed in the microwave region using alternating layers of anisotropic materials, an exciting finding because it is makes possible the ability to scale down the microwave wavelength of centimeters to submicron sizes.

ORDVAC was constructed by the University of Illinois for the Ballistic Research Laboratory at Aberdeen Proving Ground, under a contract from the Ordnance Department.
The University of Illinois received the cooperation of members of the staff of the Ballistic Research Laboratory in the procurement of materials and the assignment of members of the staff of BRL during the final phases of construction.
ORDVAC was provisionally accepted by the Ballistic Research Laboratory on the basis of tests conducted between 15-25 November 1951 at the University of Illinois.

The common assumption is that military conflicts, wound ballistics research, and a steady stream of daily experience in our larger cities have provided the knowledge and skill to assure uniform excellence in treatment of these injuries.
Wound ballistics research was reduced to taking movies of shots into everything imaginable, and the focus of understanding narrowed to exclude every variable except projectile velocity.
A study done in our laboratory (9), for example, showed damage to a pig colon caused by a nondeforming military bullet traveling at 911 m/s (2989 ft/s) that was only slightly larger than the dimensions of the bullet that had caused it.

EDVAC was also built for the U.S. Army's Ballistics Research Laboratory[?] by the University of Pennsylvania.
The ENIAC designers Eckert and Mauchly[?] were joined by John von Neumann and some others and the new design was based on von Neumann's 1945 report on ENIAC.
EDVAC was delivered to the Ballistics Research Laboratory in August 1949 and after a number of problems had been discovered and solved the computer began operation in 1951 although only on a limited basis.

 Computational Ballistics 2007
Computational Ballistics, in spite of its specific objectives, has a wide range of applications and, as a science, relates to a great variety of phenomena which occur from the moment an object or projectile is fired until its effects are observed in a target.
Ballistic studies include applications as varied as the study of the structural and control behaviour of rockets and communication satellites; bird strike effects on commercial aircraft, terrorist attacks and crackworthiness modelling.
Many of the basic problems of ballistics are similar to those in other fields of applications, such as combustion, heat conduction, in-flight structural behaviour, trajectory related issues, contact, impact, penetration, structural response to shock waves and many others.

It took so long to complete because there was a dispute over patent rights between Eckert and Mauchly and the University of Pennsylvania.

CHIN - Interactive Investigator - 1868-1996 - The Delorme Affair
In the 1920s, ballistics analysis was in its infancy both in Canada and the United States.
Dr. Derome, then the director of the Laboratoire de recherches médico-légales [Forensic research laboratory], was summoned to testify as a ballistics expert.
During the third trial, Dr. Derome experimented with a new method of ballistics analysis: by pouring a sulphur-based mixture into the barrel, which he removed after it hardened, he obtained a faithful reproduction of the grooves inside the barrel.

The pressing needs of BRL also brought to the Moore School a team of skilled women who operated desk-top calculating machines to produce manually firing tables.
Much of Mauchly's daily life was occupied with both war research and his teaching duties.

[Deathwatch] Herman H. Goldstine, mathematician, 90
Assigned to the Army's Ballistics Research Laboratory in Aberdeen, Md., he began persuading Army officials to invest money in a computer project underway at the University of Pennsylvania engineering school.
He also said he had a major role in bringing Johnny von Neumann to the ENIAC project after seeing him one day in 1944 at the Aberdeen train station and persuading the math giant to visit Penn. At the time, von Neumann was attending a scientific advisory committee meeting at the Army's Ballistics Research Laboratory.
He was intrigued by high-speed devices that would help with his work on the atom bomb at Los Alamos, N.M. Many of the difficult calculations for the first atom bomb were made with electronic calculators that were essentially office machines.
