Patronage also grew on the services between Motherwell and Cumbernauld and on the Kilmarnock-Ayr Burns line, but since both services started during 1996/97, full year comparative figures are not yet available.
However, some competing bus services introduced during the year, such as an express service between Balloch and Glasgow, did not prove successful and were subsequently withdrawn.
Annual patronage on the Northern Suburban line increased by 21.3 per cent, the Whifflet line by 19.3 per cent and the Paisley Canal line by 12 per cent.
