The badge was issued by both the United States Army and the U.S. Air Force with the Navy equivalent known as the Dirigible Pilot Badge.
The badge consisted of a balloon centered on a standard Pilot’s Badge and was issued in two degrees.
The badge was then redesigned as the Balloon Pilot Badge and, during the Second World War, was issued by the Army Air Forces.

 Austro-Hungarian Army - Field Pilot's Badge
This brigade consisted of the railway and telegraph regiment, the automobile corps and the airship detachment and was commanded by the enthusiastic balloon pilot Generalmajor Leopold Schleyer Edler von Pontemalghera.
The field pilot badge and the navy pilot badge were by the way, with the exception of the merit cross with and without the crown which had a rather civilian character, the only distinction which could be awarded to both officers as well as NCOs and men.
To secure the badge a very thin and sharp steel pin is found at the reverse which runs from the needle block on the rear side of the Kaiser's crown through a loop at the rear side of the initial shield.

The flying companies, balloon companies and aviation parks were mostly commanded by a Hauptmann (Rittmeister) or an Oberleutnant, the aircraft workshops, the field weather headquarters and the mobile and static field weather stations respectively mostly by Leutnants or Oberleutnants or appropriately trained military officials of corresponding rank.
Field pilots who do not meet the requirements for the extension of the right to wear the badge in wartime (category: performance and skill) have to remove the badge and return the government property badge to the headquarters of aviation troops.
Feldwebel Leo Koch, who as a Korporal of FliK 22 was awarded the field pilot badge model 1913 on the 8th of July 1916 (which is confirmed by different contemporary photographs) wore a field pilot badge with the double crown, which was secured on the reverse side by a needle.

Wanted...Chainguard and Badge for a 1960 Schwinn Cycletruck.
Ballooners should be LOADED with doodads and geegaws (unless you've got such a nice original ballooner that you don't want to mess it up).
I just bought an old bike and I don't know what make it is. The head badge is missing, the only markings left on it is the word Sterling on the chain gaurd and the serial number found on the left rear drop out.

The thing about middleweight and ballooner bikes is their value shoots up when they have accessories.
It is a paintee fender bike with the fender paint scheme identicle to earlier balloon S-2 bikes where the painted teardrop is tapered to a point, and the pinstripes flare out to meet the base of the teardrop at the fender's edge.
I see some ballooners but they are usually very well used and not the high level bikes we all want.

A real badge for Balloon Pilots (2nd Pattern) should measure 58mm high and 45mm wide.
Catch is located just above the basket on the reverse.
Also on the reverse is the patent # 231240 - This is located on the back of the balloon.
