Ballroom dance - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ballroom dance is a style of partner dance which originated in the western world and is now enjoyed both socially and competitively around the globe.
Most competitive ballroom dances were social and/or folk dances before being formalized as ballroom dances, and many of these dances are still danced as social and folk dance.
Some ballroom dance instructors specialize in the dances of one place or time, or in fad dances, short-lived, time-specific dances which may be associated with the music or style of an era ("The Twist") or a particular song ("YMCA", "La Macarena").

Men were expected to be extremely active in the ballroom to make up for the total passivity required of ladies; who could not ask gentlemen to dance, and who could not even be seen to cross the dance floor unescorted.
Ladies would be conveyed to their station by a gentleman, and there they would wait until another gentleman came to speak to them, ask them to dance or convey them to the punchbowl.

When the $200,000 ballroom went up in flames on 27 January 1935, another even bigger and better "Rendezvous" was built on the site in less than 3 months - and because of the then depression economy, at a fraction of the cost of the first.
In the early morning hours of 7 August 1966, the Rendezvous Ballroom burned to the ground and an apartment complex was later built at the location.
