Of critical note, while Ballston is located of an exit of Interstate 66, that portion of I-66 is HOV-2 (minimum of two occupants per vehicle) at certain times.

 rants and ramblings
Today's Washington Post has a good, semi-layperson-friendly explainer about why the DC area has has a freakish amount of snow this season.
Most of Metro's rail cars are vulnerable in snowy weather because all-electrical components -- motors, ventilation fans, fuses -- hang from the undercarriage.
The Metro is still running, though, so things haven't completely shut down.

It is not convenient to the Metro and it is not a very pleasant property.
It is a 50 yard walk from the entrance to the King St. Metro station.
I prefer to be out of the "fray" of the tourist traps when I stay in areas like D.C. By being near the "end of the line" of the Metro, there are always seats getting on in the morning and seats free up on the way out of the city in the evening.
