The county infirmary and fever hospital are situated at Cavan; and there are 18 dispensaries, situated respectively at Arvagh, Bailieborough, Ballyjamesduff, Ballyconnell, Belturbet, Ballymacue, Ballinagh, Ballyhaise, Cootehill, Crossdoney, Cavan, Killesandra, Kingscourt, Mullagh, Shercock, Swanlinbar, Stradone, and Virginia; all of wchi are maintained partly by Grand Jury presentments and partly by voluntary contributions in equal portions.
The substratum around the former place is mostly mountain limestone, which dips rapidly to the west, and appears to pass under the Slieve Russell range of mountains, which are composed of the new red sandstone formation, with some curious amalgamations of greenstone.
It is pleasantly situated on the river Erne, on the road from Cavan to Ballyconnell, and owes its origin to the Lanesborough family, whose patronage has also contributed materially to tis prosperity.

It is situated at the junction of four townlands Annagh, Cullyleenan, Doon and Derryginny in the parish of Tomregan, Barony of Tullyhaw, County of Cavan, Province of Ulster, Republic of Ireland.
The earliest surviving mention of the name Ballyconnell is an entry in the Annals of the Four Masters for the year 1323 A.D., which states "Rory Mac Mahon, son of the Lord of Oriel, Melaghlin O'Seagannain, and Mac Muldoon, were slain by Cathal O'Rourke at Bel-atha-Chonaill".
Conall was the great Ulster Hero and Red Branch knight Conall Cernach, who was killed at Ballyconnell by the three Ruadhcoin sent by Queen Maeve of Connacht to avenge the slaying of her husband Ailill by Conall.

The Ballinamore and Ballyconnell Navigation was built primarily to link two of the more important Irish rivers- the Erne and the Shannon.
By the late 1840's, when the final scheme for the Ballinamore and Ballyconnell Canal was conceived, the development of the principal inland navigations of Ireland was virtually complete.
The Ballinamore and Ballyconnell Canal comprises 8km of still water navigation, 13km through lakes, and the remaining 39km along the canalised course of the Woodford River.

The Ballinamore and Ballyconnell Canal is the name given to the junction navigation that once linked the Shannon and Erne navigations.
The Bill will also have the effect of applying the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, to the Ballinamore and Ballyconnell drainage district as is the case with all other drainage districts within the State.
The Bill is a comprehensive one which overcomes the deficiencies of the old enactments and will enable the commissioners to properly undertake the care, management, control, improvement and development of the Shannon navigation, including the Ballinamore and Ballyconnell navigation and the section of the River Erne Navigation within the State.

In March 1846, during the Irish Famine, a large group of Kells and near relatives emigrated to Eastern Canada from the small town of Ballyconnell, County Cavan, Ireland.
October 1796 at Ballyconnell, County Cavan, and died on the 16 March 1886 on his farm in Peel, Wellington County, Ontario.

 Conall Cearnach
Conall was himself slain by the Connaughtmen, from the west of Ireland, who were mortal enemies of the men of Ulster in the 1st century A.D. It was he who had been responsible for killing their king at some previous time, and understandeably they were somewhat upset with him on account of this.
The place at which he died is called Ballyconnell, a small town in County Cavan, quite near to the border with the present "Northern" Ireland.
According to tradition, this is the spot where the legendary Conall Cearnach, who gave his name to Ballyconnell, is buried.

A magnificent memorial to Kieran Doherty TD was unveiled to mark the 20th anniversary of his death on hunger strike as large crowds gathered in Ballyconnell Co. Cavan for a weekend of events from 3 to 5 August.
Twenty years later, a full weekend programme of events drew people to Ballyconnell from all over County Cavan and further afield.
The organising committee described it as "a celebration of the hunger strikers' lives and legacy as well as a commemoration of their deaths".
