A bay gelding by Archive out of Bright Cherry, Arkle was bred by Mary Baker at Ballymacoll stud near Naul, County Dublin.
Owned by the Duchess of Westminster, trained by Tom Dreaper in Ireland and ridden by Pat Taaffe, Arkle became the first racehorse in Britain to capture public attention outside racing circles.
The government-owned Irish National Stud, at Tully, Kildare Town, Co. Kildare, Ireland has in its possession the skeleton of Arkle.

Golan was bred and raised at the famous Ballymacoll Stud near Dunboyne where Lord Weinstock and his late father-in-law have successfully bred many champions for decades.
Arkle was foaled at the stud, his dam having been sent there for that sole purpose by the Baker family.
He was acquired for stud purposes by Coolmore Stud during last season when his racing days ended and while immediate plans for the colt were to retire at the end of 2001, his owner Lord Weinstock persuaded the stud to leave him in training for another year with wonderful results.

The way things stand now, North Light figures to be one of the few sons of Danehill that will be readily available to North American breeders.

Country House retired to Ballymacoll Stud in 1959, just a year before Dorothy Paget's death, and the subsequent sale of the stud along with the best of the bloodstock to Michael Sobell, whose son-in-law Lord Weinstock is the current owner of Ballymacoll.
Golan will hopefully soon have his opportunity to add his name the role of honour of the blue riband of the English Turf.

Besides buying the yard at West Ilsley on the advice of their racing manager Sir Gordon Richards, Sobell and Weinstock also bought the Ballymacoll Stud in Ireland in 1960 along with many bloodstock interests from the executors of the late Dorothy Paget.
He eventually sold West Ilsley to the Queen, a close friend, but kept the 300-acre Ballymacoll Stud, in County Meath, Ireland.
Lord Weinstock's best filly was the 1983 Oaks and St Leger winner Sun Princess while Pilsudski, one of the best older horses to have graced a racecourse in recent years, provided him with victories in the Eclipse, the Breeders' Cup Turf and Japan Cup.

The four-year-old son of Danehill, out of the Rainbow Quest mare Sought Out, finished second by a half-length to New Morning in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes (Eng-G3) on May 31 at Sandown in his only start this year.
Trained by Sir Michael Stoute, North Light won the Dante Stakes (Eng-G2) and Epsom Derby in consecutive starts last year before finishing second by a half-length to Grey Swallow in the Irish Derby (Ire-G1) and fifth to Bago in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Fr-G1) at Longchamp.
