I was born and raised in Ballymena, a town situated in the heart of County Antrim, Northern Ireland.
Ballymena is known as the City of the Seven Towers because years ago there were seven towers visible as one approached from any direction.
However, it is still great to go home and walk along the river near to my parents' house, to see the many colors of green that are Ireland, to hear the accent again, to walk through the town remembering, and to sample the dulse, fish and chips, and yellow man once more.

What I am also convinced of is that Ballymena nationalists don't support the slogans for dissident republicans, and are not with the Ballymena RIRA people who put firebombs in the town centre, who recently were in court.
I am sure that the stoning of Linfield fans in Derry or the attacks on these Ballymena protestants, as well as the attacks on Catholics that we also have, and the attacks on racial minorities are the key problem NI faces as we move into the future.
And also that Ballymena has a degree of symbolic value, being the buckle on the Bible belt, Paisley's (adopted) hometown, and all the other stereotypes, and that this is a bit of a disturbance in the force for the average Ballymenian.

Ballymena Poor Law Union was formed 13th May 1840, and covered an area of 252 square miles.
The cost of the building was £6,600 plus £1,800 for fixtures and fittings etc. It was declared fit for the admission of paupers on 3rd November 1843, and admitted its first inmates two weeks later on the 17th November.

Ballymena is situated right in the middle of Co Antrim, almost midway between Belfast and Portrush, and is known as 'the city of the seven towers'.
It was built in the last third of the nineteenth century but stood vacant for a long time and because of vandalism and decay had to be demolished in the 1950's.
We visited Ballymena a few years ago and I was sorry to see that most traces of old Ballykeel are gone.
