Ballymena Borough Council has introduced a number of recycling services and initiatives aimed at reducing the waste that we send to landfill and protecting our precious natural resources.
With challenging new European and National legislation and targets to meet the council is continuing with its blue bin paper recycling scheme and has introduced boxes for the collection of mixed dry recyclables, it is our intention to introduce brown bins for the collection of organic waste from the kerbside.
The refuse collection service is provided on a weekly basis to approximately 25,000 households within the Ballymena borough with the service consisting of eight refuse collection vehicles and twenty operatives.

NEWRY and Mourne Council is considering following Ballymena Borough Council's lead in introducing a pit bull amnesty following the mauling to death of a young girl in England.
Ballymena Borough Council has introduced a month-long amnesty giving concerned dog owners the opportunity to surrender their dogs or take it for an inspection to determine whether or nor it is an illegal breed.
A council spokesperson said the council is currently considering whether or not to introduce an amnesty.

Ballymena Sinn Féin Councillor, Monica Digney, has slammed the DUP for using ratepayers’ money to pay for the recent ‘Love Ulster’ trip to Dublin.
Her comments follow last night’s meeting of Ballymena Borough Council when DUP Councillor Robin Stirling said that he would be claiming expenses for the 3-day trip to Dublin as he was there “representing the borough”.
The people of Ballymena are just coming to terms with the fact that they will have to face the biggest rates hike in the north, and to top it all off, they are now expected to fork out for what is essentially a political junket to Dublin.

Residents across the Ballymena borough are being urged to participate in a Yellow Pages recycling campaign, which starts when the new edition of the directory, sporting fluffy chicks on the front cover, is delivered across the area.
The Directory Recycling Scheme has also awarded Ballymena Borough Council a grant to help collect and transport the old Yellow Pages from the schools to a local recycling company and to enable the co-ordination of recycling workshops at the ecos Centre.
For households in the Ballymena borough who do not have a child participating in the schools competition, there is an alternative option to recycle old Yellow Pages.

Digney prepared for Monday night's monthly meeting of Council, her first meeting since the chilling warning, she spoke to the Times about her appreciation of the DUP statements which were made in the media in the wake of the threat.
She said: "I have been made aware of a postcard which was delivered to the Ballymena Borough Council offices carrying a threat to my life.

Owner of dangerous breeds in the Ballymena area, were given one month to hand over the animals without fear of prosecution, and at a meeting of the council yesterday evening, it was revealed that over 60 dogs had been examined and only 15 of them had been confirmed as illegal.
The dangerous dog amnesty in Ballymena was prompted after a County Antrim family were attacked by a pit-bull type animal, while walking their dog in Randalstown Forest Park in November 2006.
As a result of the success of Ballymena's amnesty, Omagh District Council is to hold their own, while Newry and Mourne District Council and Derry City Council are also likely to follow suit.
