The Ballymun Regeneration Project aims to create a new town in the north Dublin suburb, which is sustainable economically, socially, environmentally and physically, while preserving the existing community, working with the existing tenants and providing the type of town that suits their needs.
Old Ballymun failed due to a combination of inadequate facilities and poorly designed and constructed high-rise tower blocks, with inherent defects both structurally and in terms of energy conservation, which proved difficult to manage and maintain, leading to a high turnover of tenants, many vacant flats, high levels of unemployment and drugs problems.
At present, the residents pay a flat weekly rate for space heating and domestic hot water and the cost of operation the central heating system is highly subsidised by Dublin City Council.
