Balmoral Avenue is a large road which intersects the Lisburn Road and the Malone Road.
A balmoral, named for the Scottish village and castle, is also an unbrimmed cap consisting of a band, a loose crown, and a short length of exposed ribbon.

After crossing the Hurunui River, the Waiau Branch ran in a straight line through the Balmoral State Forest as it was then known, and the stations of Balmoral and Pahau, before rejoining State Highway 7 for the first time since Waikari, at the town of Culverden.
Balmoral had a private siding for the State Forest and provided log traffic for the line.
The bridge shows clearly on an aerial photograph dated about 1960 and was probably of a similar type and size to the Waitohi River bridge.
