  Balsa Facts
Balsa is one of the few trees in the jungle which has a simple leaf shape.
Nature evidently designed the balsa tree to be a "nurse tree" which would protect the slower-growing species of trees from the scorching jungle sun during their critical early years.
In selecting balsa sheets for use in your model, it is important to consider the way the grain runs through the sheet as well as the weight of the sheet.

 Balsawood Structure Design
Wood grain is composed of bundles of thin tubular components or fibers which are naturally formed together.
Since balsa, like most woods, is high in water content, and the goal of this project is to win a weight versus load carrying capacity competition, the effects of baking out some of the water were tested.
Often a vertical piece of balsa would bite in to a horizontal piece, thus creating a strong joint that was better than most glued joints simply because the material had compressed to form a sort of socket for the joint.

Balsa Wood: Why you might want to use it for Model Building
Today balsa wood is overwhelmingly used in model aircraft building and in architectural/engineering models of many sorts.
Balsa is a pale white to gray, nondescript wood, with little grain pattern.
Wood that is 6 lbs or less is considered to be of "contest grade" for any of you who are into model airplane construction, and used for low stress components.

If balsa was uniform from density to density, the strengths for the 8 pound samples would be 80, while the 14 pound samples would be 140.
Balsa wood is very porous and as a result picks up moisture from the air quite readily.
Due to the nature in which balsa is cut, the wood labeled 1/8" by 1/8" does not always meet those dimensions.

Balsa wood trees grow rapidly during their first five years, providing some shade to other plants with their oversized leaves.
Because raw balsa wood has such a high moisture content, it must be dried in a kiln for at least two weeks before it can be used commercially.
Balsa wood does have a grain, so consumers should be aware of what type of cut they need for a specific project.

While it is the lightest of the commercial hardwoods and unlikely to make anyone's top-10 list of fine cabinet woods, balsa has a long, proud history -- it was used in construction of the Allies' planes in World War II -- and is one of the most frequently imported woods to the United States.
In World War I, balsa was used extensively in making life rafts and for packing armor plates for battleships.

Since wood has a cellular structure whose outer fibers can absorb liquid, some of its physical properties can undoubtedly be altered by immersing it in or coating it with glue.
The data scatter present for each wood condition reflects the effects of such factors as nonhomogeneous wood composition, the probable small variation in beam cantilever length and force location relative to the fixed support, as well as slight differences in glue soak time and/or glue film thickness.
The raw wood struts failed due to a combination of bending and horizontal shear stress, producing a long, diagonal break that extended away from the support along the length of the beam.

The best way to log balsa trees is to go back to the methods of Paul Bunyan - chop them down with an axe, haul them to the nearest river by ox team, tie them together into rafts, and then float the rafts of balsa logs down the river to the saw mill.
At the saw mill the raw balsa is first rough cut into large boards, then carefully kiln dried, and finally packed into bales for shipment to the U.S. via ocean freighter.
