Balsaminaceae are fleshy herbs with more or less translucent stems and usually spiral, toothed leaves.
The flowers are strongly monosymmetric and nearly always have a spur on the adaxial sepal, but since the flower is held upside-down the spur is on the lower (abaxial) part of the flower.
