Balthild's Christianization involves the unification of Austrasia, Neustria and Burgundy, her patronage and reformation of monasteries, and her personal and royal acts of Christian charity.
Balthild's transformation of Francia is her act of saintly virtue; unlike previous queens, her sanctity does not rest on private acts of faith but on public acts as a queen.

 Bryn Mawr Classical Review 98.6.1
Finally, the life of Balthild presents particular complications since she was a controversial political figure, whose cloistered life was the result of political exile.
Balthild's hagiographer responds to this controversy by subverting her political life into the domestic sphere.
This approach is one that is similar to other recent scholarship on hagiography, for example, D. Krueger in his analysis of the Life of Symeon the Fool (BMCR 96.9.26, reviewed by P. Halsall).[[3]] C.'s analysis is particularly strong when she investigates the texts in detail, especially in the last three chapters.

Queen Balthild's royal seal found   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Queen Balthild is now thought to have been born an Anglian aristocrat, who was then sold into slavery.
But the discovery, by a metal-detector enthusiast, of her royal seal matrix buried in a field in East Anglia is shedding new light on her extraordinary story.
An analysis of her name suggests that Balthild was a member of one of the Anglian (rather than Saxon) tribes and therefore almost certainly came from an Anglian area, namely Suffolk or Norfolk.

 Commentaria
A Vita gave of Balthild's activities and death, as well as the prominent place it accorded to the bishop of Paris in the circle of Balthild's friends, leaves no doubt that this version was written at Chelles, not long after Balthild's death in 679, by someone who knew the queen quite we11.
Balthild, like Radegund and all Merovingian wives and mothers, was socialized to serve in the family and the broader aristocratic structure as a mediatrix of conflicts.
Finally, when she spoke of Balthild's plans for Chelles, she made it clear that Balthild knew only too well that the congregation had to offer prayers not only for the king and queen but for the royal officials as well.

As a young girl, Balthild was sent to the same French royal court as a slave - perhaps as a relative of the defeated Ricberht.
By all accounts she was a ruthless ruler: as part of a continuing struggle with the church, she seems to have been responsible for the murder of at least nine French bishops.
When her son Clothar came of age in 664, Balthild's rule ended - and she was virtually imprisoned in a convent.

The ideas, the political configurations, the legislative norms, and the artistic and spiritual forms of expression that developed during this period were to have a huge impact on the subsequent course of western history.
Barbarian Europe was a multicultural melting-pot that produced remarkable, larger-than-life individuals such as Balthild, the Anglo-Saxon slave who rose to become queen of France; the missionary St. Boniface, who helped to transform the politics and culture of eighth-century Europe; and the Emperor Charlemagne, who brought a new unity to western Europe.
From the Frankish kingdoms to Anglo-Saxon England to Pictish Scotland to Moorish Spain, ideas, traditions, and forms of expression emerged that revived and recreated Europe, fusing with the Greco-Roman heritage to produce a hybrid culture that has retained its power, influence, and creativity to this day.

Later Merovingian kings and queens did even more.
For example, in the mid-7th century, Queen Balthild gave her wealth to churches, offered privileges to monasteries to keep them free from the control of both royal agents and nearby bishops, and late in life retired to a convent as a nun.
In this period monasteries became important elements of religious and political life.
