Baltic Sea Region Studies is a programme at the advanced undergraduate / Master’s level offering an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the societies, cultures and economics of the region surrounding the Baltic Sea.
The Baltic Sea region has a new status in the process of European integration, and the programme explores its very varied societies from both historical and contemporary perspectives.
Its focus is on historical and current political, economic and cultural development in the Baltic Sea Region, national and international co-operation in and among the countries of the region, as well as the region's perspectives in the context of European regionalisation and globalisation.

The largest of the ten rivers flowing to the Baltic are the Vistula (draining the territories of Belarus, Poland, Slovak Republic and Ukraine) and the Oder/Odra (draining the territories of the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland).

The histories of today's Baltic countries took a first "common turn" in the 13th century when Christianity and feudalism were effectively introduced to the region by the invasion of the crusaders from the west (German Sword Brethren, Denmark) and the conversion of Lithuania's rulers from Paganism to Christianity.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Baltic provinces (Curonia, Livonia, Estonia and Ingria) and Lithuania in the 19th century, albeit with names and borders different from the present-day countries, were part of the Russian Empire.
After the Baltic states achieved independence in 1991, while German made a comeback as a language of study it was English that became the most commonly studied foreign language, and the role of Russian language in education fell sharply.

The Baltics seminar grouped 20 experts in occupational safety and health from trade union confederations in the Baltic Sea region (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland).
Most of the participants (see list at the end of this seminar report) were technical experts by training, responsible for occupational health and safety issues in their unions which represented workers mainly in the shipping industry, but also in health care services, forestry, mining, construction, agriculture and chemicals.
According to representatives from the Baltics, there is a problem due to the backward technologies inherited from the ex-Soviet Union and there is a lack of investment which has resulted in a hazardous environment.

In the Baltic area the total amount of precipitation consists of convective and frontal precipitation in different mixtures.
To establish a baseline for regional climate modelling not only the absolute amount of precipitation but also the type of precipitation event has to be monitored.
Based on radar and satellite observations a climatology of precipitation over the Baltic area will be derived with special emphasis on the internal variability of precipitation type, intensity and spatial distribution in the Baltic area.
